Update and BF question

Hi ladies!  Elijah was born on Feb. 15 at 9:54am.  He is doing well.

My birth story: I was one week overdue, so on Feb. 14, I checked into the hospital at 5pm to be induced.  When I arrived, they discovered that I was already in labor but progressing very slowly.  They monitored me and discovered that Elijah's heart rate was dropping very low during and after each contraction.  They decided to give me some medicine to stop the contractions, let me rest, and try again in the morning.  At 6am on Feb. 15, they monitored me and Elijah and determined that his heart rate was good - 145.  They started the pitocin and things went south quickly.  Within two hours, Elijah's heart rate had dropped below 70 and they had trouble even finding it on the external monitor.  They tried an internal probe, but could not find that he had a consistent heart rate.  They immeidately stopped the pitocin and tried to stop my contractions with meds.  My doctor arrived at 9am and said that a C section was the only option to make sure Elijah was ok.  The C section wasn't that bad, and immediately after, the dr told me that Elijah had managed to wrap the cord around his neck which likely caused the heart rate drop.  He had to be put in the NICU on oxygen until around 6pm on the 15th, but he's doing great now.

Now, my question.  I am BF and Elijah has taken to it like a champ - he's already exceeded his birth weight.  However, my nipples and tender and sore to the touch.  I have been using lanolin but they are still very sore.  Everytime he latches, it hurts really bad but once he starts nursing, the pain goes away.

Has anyone else had this?  Is it normal and is there anything I can do to ease the pain?  TIA

  • I'm no help with the BFing, but congrats on Elijah!
  • Congratulations on your adorable baby boy!

If you can survive the first few weeks BF, the rest is a breeze. I could not have gotten through the first month without Soothie gel pads: https://www.amazon.com/Lansinoh-Soothies-Gel-Pads-Pair/dp/B002KGHUL4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1298403141&sr=8-1  They are cooling and pain relieving at the same time. It comes one pair a box, but you can reuse them for up to 48 hrs I think (check the instructions). I cannot recommend them enough!

Since lanolin is so thick, in the beginning it sometimes hurt more to put on than it seemed to help. You may want to look into breast pads that already have lanolin in them like this: https://www.amazon.com/Evenflo-Comfort-Select-Nursing-Lanolin/dp/B002E1O6VM/ref=sr_1_3?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1298403340&sr=1-3.

If you have anymore questions about BF, please let me know. I am happy to help, if I can! Good luck and congratulations again on baby Elijah :)

  • Congratulations!  I second the Soothie gel pads rec...and it will get better with time.  Hang in there!
  • Congratulations, I love the name Elijah. Yes the pain in the beginning is normal. I remember I had one side that hurt more than the other and every time LO would latch on, cuss words would fly out of my mouth and I'm not a cusser. People say hang in there the first few weeks, I would say the first month. BFing was hard to get used to but I love it now. Hang in there mama, you are doing great!

  • Congratulations!

As far as the Bfing, I also had very tender nips. I even had to go back to my OB before my 6 week pp checkup because they were so torn up I would cry every time Sam latched on.

Good news it will get better and easier.

Bad news, it may take a while. My suggestions: breast shells, not nipple shields, but the shells. I would use them between feedings so that nothing was rubbing up against them causing more irritation than before. It also let them naturally dry with my milk still on them, so that they weren't getting over irritated by wiping them off. If they get really inflamed, mine were RED, you can use some cortisone cream, just wipe it off before each feeding. Also, ice packs were my bff! I would alternate the shells and the ice packs. Just make sure you take them off about 20 minutes before his next feeding so that you have a chance to warm back up so feeding will be easier.

Good luck, and keep reminding yourself that it is worth it, and you are doing a great job!

  • Congrats on Elijah!

As far as bf'ing... ditto what everyone else has said. Unfortunately the tenderness/soreness is completely normal in the beginning. I remember it felt like needles and hurt so bad.

Luckily, after a few weeks, it will go away and won't feel like anything.
