Prenatals making you sick

I have had horrible MS since getting preg. I noticed yesterday that I felt fine all morning, and that I didn't start feeling sick until after I took my prenatal. Today, I haven't taken my prenatal yet, and I feel great! I know that I should take the prenatal, but if its making me sick, is it ok to not take it? Are there any alternatives to taking my prenatal?

Re: Prenatals making you sick

  • Before I was even pregnant I felt sick when I took my prenatal in the morning.  I think it was because I did it before I ate or when I ate, so I still had an empty stomach.  Ever since, I have taken it when I brush my teeth before I go to bed and I have not had that problem (knock on wood!)

  • Try the gummy prenatals. They're easier on your stomach.

  • most doctors actually recommend you take them in the evening for this very reason - try taking yours after dinner on a full stomach, or right before bed.

I take the vitafusion brand prenatal gummy.  It's never upset my stomach.  It does NOT contain iron, which is probably why it is so easy on the stomach, but my doctor was fine with that and didn't even think I needed an extra iron supplement.

  • I guess I never even thought about taking it at night. I will def switch to nights!     .::slaps self for not thinking of that::.

  • I just take mine before bed and have been totally fine. Try that!
  • I am taking mine before bed now as well, because they make me sick in the morning, and during the day I just don't remember (and don't wanna have prenatals on my desk at work yet - not before everybody knows).

  • Yes. When I was taking my PNV's in the morning, I would have to take them with food in my stomach. I have now switched to taking them at night with my progesterone. No more sickness. :)
  • I agree with others about the Vitafusion Gummy Prenatals - you can buy them at Target or Walgreens.  I was taking pill forms but at about 4.5 weeks they started making me nauseated from the smell of them.  Now I actually look forward to the prenatals because they're two each night and they're YUMMY!!  :)  I would never NOT take your prenatal on purpose even if you had no other choice out there (which luckily you do) because the folic acid and other vitamins are SO essential to the baby's development especially in the first trimester.

  • I have been taking mine at night too...no negative or icky feelings yet from them. Sounds like others take theirs at night too.

  • To avoid nausea I have to take mine right after lunch. If I take them in the morning or before bed they make me feel sick. I take prescription chewables. I forget what they are called but they are blue and they are berry flavored.

  • Yep-- prenatals make me extra nauseous and it happened with my DD too. So to get around it I take 2 kids flintstones and 1 caltrate table and it contains the same amount of vitamins/minerals I need. My OB/GN suggested this with DD the first time I was pregnant.
  • I had the same problem. It was horrible. I now take them at night and its the best thing ever. Anyone out there constantly burping? Thats my issue right now. It's so embarrassing!
  • I had that problem until I go the gummy chewables.  Made a huge difference and they taste good :o)
