Babies: 0 - 3 Months

1 wk old has been sleeping for 5 hrs

DD hasn't had a good nursing session since 7:30am. I have tried to wake her up multiple times and she will wake up, latch, and suck for maybe 2-3 minutes but just keeps falling asleep again. I called the pedi and they said let her sleep for a little bit and try again and if she doesn't have a good feed in the next few hours call them back, but I can't help but still freak out a little. Has this happened to anyone else?

  • Ellie was doing this in the hospital and would wake up and eat when she was ready. We could not wake her up until then. We tried undressing her, wet washcloths on her face and back, and Sweetease but she refused to wake up until she was ready to eat.

  • Has she hit her birth weight again? My DD started trying to sleep for 5 hour stretches her second night in the hospital... when she had hit her birth weight again at her one week check-up, the pedi gave permission for her to sleep as long as she wanted. She's been sleeping for 4-6 hour stretches every night since... she does eat pretty well and pretty frequently during the day.

Try changing LOs diaper, undressing her, and tickling her to wake her up better before you try and get her to eat if you haven't already been doing that. Good luck!

  • Did she clusterfeed at all this morning before this long nap?

I was told not to worry too much if she clusterfed  and then took a longer sleep. we got lucky last night and she clusterfed all evening and slept 4 hours overnight...

    good luck.

  • I had a very sleepy newborn. I was also advised to wake her up but it just didn't work so I decided to just follow her cues and feed her on demand and let her sleep when and how long she wanted to. She was back up to her birth weight at around a week and a half and has been thriving since. She sleeps up to 7 hours at night and is a super happy baby since I decided to just trust my instinct and follow her cues and stop trying to control everything.
  • This has been happening to me nightly and bc LO is gaining weight slowly the pedi doesn't want me to go longer than 3-4 hours at night.  What I've been doing is pumping and bottle feeding.  It takes way less effort on his part and I at least know he's getting the calories he needs.
