Our pedi had us give DS half of a suppository (the children's glycerin ones) and said if it didn't work in 15 minutes to give him another one. I waited 30 minutes and it worked. It wasn't a crazy blowout, but it was an extremely large poopie diaper and there were a couple smaller poops that followed.
I would say work quickly, the glycerin will sometimes melt from the warmth of your hands. So, have the diaper off and be ready to go when you open the wrapper. If it doesn't slide in easily (sorry, TMI), you can put a little dab of Vaseline on it. But they go in pretty easy. No need to place very far inside - you just want to get it past the anus using the tip of your finger. You should get results in about 30 minutes. Be prepared for some crying - I've heard that the poo can still be uncomfortable for them.
Sorry for the descriptive advice, but most folks haven't done this on a baby and it can be scary the first time.
2 years TTC with 5 losses, 1 year recovering, 6 months applying for adoption approval, and almost a year waiting for a placement. Then, a miracle BFP at age 36!
We've used the glycerin suppositories a couple times. They're easy to administer, and they've generally worked within a few minutes. Not a blowout, just a big poop.
