Transition from hospital to home bed rest

I've been in the hospital since 1/18 and my doc told me this morning that as long as I stay status quo between now and 26 weeks, she will be discharging me to home bed rest at 26 weeks. So I am looking at going home in 10 days!!

I'm so excited and happy, but I'm also terrified out of my mind. This hospital room is my little safety bubble. At home I won't have nurses reassuring me about things, my doctor won't visit every day etc etc.

I know I'm doing well and my doc wouldn't let me go if it wasn't ok, but this is scarier than I thought it would be!

Anyone have this happen to them?

Re: Transition from hospital to home bed rest

  • My situation isn't quite the same - I was only in the hospital for 3 days, and went home on modified bedrest.  BUT - that first few days was scary, and yes, I was back at the OB 2 days later freaking out :D So don't feel bad if you need to call!  They are there to help.

Just remember what the docs said, don't do A THING more than you were in the hospital! If your OB allows you to get up to make a quick meal or shower, follow the timeline he gave you for how long you can be up.  I know some women have a mini kitchen set up by the bed, mini fridge, little microwave, things like that so they don't have to go up and down the stairs.

Oh, and most of all - congrats for making it this far, and here's to another uneventful few preggo months for you!

  • eeeeeeeeeee!!!  CHRISTY!!!  i'm soooo excited for you!!!  wow.  you've come so far!  this is just awesome!

i dont really have any advice - but that i'm even "more strict" on myself than what my doc "allows".  i really dont do any more than what i would be allowed to do if i were in the hospital.  and...i have my MFM nurses email address...poor thing gets lots of questions from me, but it makes me feel more comfortable.

make sure you have get a little "station" set up at home.  i spend all day on my couch and have pretty much everything right here in reach so i dont have to get up!  (snacks/a huge water dispenser so i can refill my own water bottles from horizontal/ books/computer/thankyou cards/craft stuff/kleenex/papertowels..etc.

     sooo excited for you!

  • I was in the hospital for 6 weeks from 22 to 28 weeks. I've gotta say that at first I was out of my mind. I felt like I was in a prison, but when I came to the realization that they had me there to maximize delivering much further, I relaxed and took comfort in the fact that if I indeed felt out of the ordinary, that the docs or nurses were just a button press away (especially when it came to the TOCO monitor located right near my bedside).

When I had stabilized (still had the 0.5cm cervix with funneling), and arrived at 28 weeks I started to become anxious because of my dependence on knowing that should something happen, I was right there. So, I reluctantly went home. But, I figured whatever I was doing IN the hospital to keep me from delivering early must have done some good. Thus, I maintained the same routine OUT, calling the ob or peri as needed when I wasn't sure of anything.

I delivered my youngest bub at 39 weeks!

Once you go home, listen to your body and act accordingly... if you do that, all should be well. Congrats for how far you've come!
