Pregnant after IF

~XP~ 1st MFM appt not reassuring

1st MFM appt was this morning. I was referred there by my regular OB due to a size discrepancy between my twins (which can happen later in pregnancy but seems to be more concerning to the docs this early in pregnancy). I was so hoping I would be reassured that there was nothing to worry about. While the doc did say there may not be anything to worry about, he said it all depended on whether the size discrepancy stays consistent or continues to grow. If it continues to grow, then it becomes a major issue. He then very matter of factly started talking about selective reduction as the treatment to prevent the demise of the other twin. I am trying not to think worst case scenario, but this is all so difficult to contemplate. I go back in 2 weeks for my 1st trimester screen. I would just like to be able to relax and enjoy this pregnancy (considering how long it took us to get here!), but that's easier said than done.

TTC for 3 years. Finally successful after 5 IUIs and 2 cycles of IVF. Our amazing twins were born 5 weeks early on 8/16/11. Found out April 2012 that our di/di twins are ID.

  • I'm so sorry that you're dealing with this scary news. I will be keeping your LOs in my T&Ps and hoping that the size discrepancy is only a passing phase. (((HUGS)))

  • I'm sorry.  I wish it could be an uneventful pregnancy for you after struggling.  I hope the smaller twin catches up - hang in there.  *hugs*

  • I am HORRIFIED that your MFM would mention such a thing. My RE says that (we have a smaller sac with baby B and he's growing but this was a conversation about if he didn't) that this would not prevent baby A from being healthy. I can't imagine having that conversation and not being at the end of my rope. We are here for you!

  • I'm so sorry about your appointment. I'm a little surprised, actually shocked, your MFM would mention selective reduction at this point. Forgive me, but I haven't seen your earlier posts so you may have mentioned more detail about the discrepency but my daughters sacs were very different in size. Baby B did eventually catch up in size but sometime around 35w she stopped gaining and growing and we had an IUGR baby.

She's a very healthy little lady today and is in fact larger than her sister.

  • I'm so sorry to read this, and I wish you could have gotten better answers from the MFM today.  I'm hoping for the very best for you and your LOs.

Keeping you all in my T&Ps!

  • Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement and empathy. They really do help!

Also, I'm not sure I was clear in my 1st post, but the MFM was not recommending selective reduction now. He just said it would be a possibility more like 16-20 weeks if the discrepancy continued to grow. The concern, I think, although he did not really explain this (ugh!), is if I m/c the smaller one due whatever issue is causing the size discrepancy. The later in pg this happens, the more it puts the larger twin at risk for m/c, too. However, I'll be sure to clarify this at my next appointment.

Currently the babies are measuring a week apart based on the actual size of the fetuses. The sacs are clearly different sizes, but he was not as concerned about that at this point.

Again, thanks for all the T&Ps.
