Postpartum Depression

Breastfeeding while on an anti-depressant

Hi Ladies!  I'm currently on 30 mg of cymbalta (down from 60 mg pre pregnancy) daily which is the dose my dr. wants to keep me on through the rest of the pregnancy and after.  I really want to try to breastfeed LO, but everything I've read and heard said not to on cymbalta.  Is anyone breastfeeding while on an anti-depressant, cymbalta or otherwise?  Was anyone on cymbalta and switched to a different anti depressant that worked just as well?

  • I'm taking Zoloft and I'm breast feeding. Don't know much about it b/c I just started taking it. But, my dr knows I'm bf.

  • I was pumping and on effexor xr. My midwives and I decided that the breastmilk, even if it had small doses of effexor in it, was still worth giving to her over formula if I could. I ended up switching to all formula when she was a month, but not because of the antidepressant.

  • I breastfed while taking Paxil. I know it was secreted but my dr felt confident that everything would be okay. My son is happy and healthy. For me it was also a matter of benefits vs. risks and I felt that the benefits outweighed the risks.

  • You can call a free telephone service for info on drugs and BF (and pregnancy).  The website is otispregnancy.org to find a local service. They can be very helpful.  Some lactation consultants and peds are up to date, but not all.
  • When I decided to start taking meds, I called DD's pedi to check to see if I could BF while on Celexa (I think that was it). Each medication is rated. Mine was a lower level and I could BF - but decided not to after the nurse said that DD could act a little sleepy.

I'd call the pedi. Tell them what you are on and see what they say about it and BF.

  • This doesn't specifically mention Celexa, but I still hope it helps:

This one mentions Celexa, but it sounds like you already know this:

Would you feel comfortable trying one of the other meds?

  • Personally, I might try to find an older drug that will work for you. That's what I was told when going through this. I nursed for almost two years on Prozac without issues. DS is a happy, healthy child. That being said, I think a healthy happy mom is the most important thing and if this drug works for you and there aren't any warnings about taking it while BFing, I think you'll be fine to do it. I feel that breastfeeding is such an important key in preventing and treating PPD that the benefits outweigh the risks.
