Making baby cereal?

Is anybody making/planning on making their own baby cereal? Rice, oatmeal, etc.?

The ready-made baby cereals are so full of sugar, I'm not sure I want to give it to LO, however they are enriched, so they have that benefit.

I can't decide what's best!

  • Not sure which cereal you are looking at, but nothing I've seen has any added sugar.  It's just oats or rice or whatever.  You can make your own, but I like the convenience of not having to cook it each morning for him.  I make his fruits and veggies, but not the cereal.

  • The pedi mentionned that the Nestl? brand has less sugar than Gerber, but both have sugar in the top 3 ingredients.

  • Strange.  I bought gerber barley and all it had was barley.  Normally I buy earths best, and there isnt anything other than the grain.  Take a look at the ingredients next time you're at the store, I bet you can find cereal without the sugar.

  • I bought mine this time as we just started giving it, it only said rice as the ingredients. I was thinking I'd try and make my own using brown rice as I heard you can freeze it, then you wouldn't have to make it every day. That being said, there are added vitamins and extra iron in the cereals that you buy....I'm still debating.

  • I came across an article about making baby cereal a few months ago. I don't remember where I saw it. To make rice cereal, it was super easy. You just put rice in a coffee grinder and grind it until it is the same consistency as the rice cereal you buy in the store. I'm pretty sure the recipe called for long grain rice.

  • I just ground up some rice yesterday (in our old coffee grinder), but haven't cooked it yet.
