Wrap pros please come in!

Hi ladies! I know you get drive by wrap questions on a daily basis, so I'm sorry to ask this question but here goes anyway :

We used a Moby with my son for a while, but he didn't love it and neither did I. I lent it to a family member and it is now MIA. I am wanting to try something else. A friend is offering to sell her Maya sling to me for a good price but I'm not sure that is what I need. I need something easy enough, good for BF, good to wear around the house and functional to last from newborn to at least 6m- longer would be better of course.

One thing I am concerned about with the Maya is that recall that went out last year. Should I be concerned about that? And if it's a matter of just using it properly, how do you know of you're doing it right?

Thank you, ladies!!

ETA : or should I just get an infant insert for my Ergo?

  • Ok, if you didn't care for the moby, what were the reasons? I only ask because a wrap is by far (for our family) the most functional carrier. I'd recommend a woven wrap if it was the weight of the moby that you didn't care for. You can get a woven that will be much more breathable and less hot than the moby... And it will be usable for long after your LO is 6 months. As for the Maya ring sling... I wouldn't be concerned about the infantino sling recall because this sling is different. Just avoid using the cradle carry and you won't have to worry about it. We use a tummy to tummy hold with our ring sling and really love it. As DS got bigger we started doing a hip carry with it as well. I love that I can pop him in and out of the RS quickly, so I use it all the time... But I do find it difficult to do certain chores (like dishes) with him on the RS now that he is bigger... I tend to use back carries with a woven if I am going to wear him for any length of time or if I need to get something done using both hands. I am able to nurse in either carrier discreetly :) Gl!

  • A Maya is perfectly safe :) I agree that cradle carry should be avoided unless your using it to bf.

The Moby was so heavy and long. I felt like there was sooooo much fabric and i was constantly wrestling to make it comfortable. I liked it for it's main purpose but getting that thing on was a nightmare.

  • The Maya wrap is actually a ring sling (not sure why they went with such a confusing name!).  I think it's a good newborn option - the upright tummy to tummy position is great for newborns and it is a safe sling.  The cradle carry is difficult to get right so I'd skip that unless you have expert help - but most babies like the upright position better anyway.

thebabywearer.com is a good source for how to info.  I have other links in my siggy that might help too.
