Food Sensitivity Check In

This check in is for mamas who have had to restrict their diet due to food sensitivities in their LOs or themselves.

The theme for this week is favorite dish. What's your favorite allergy friendly meal? It can be breakfast, dinner, snack - whatever.

Any random tips, vents, etc. are also welcome.

Re: Food Sensitivity Check In

  • Hello!

I am so new to this... no recipes to share yet.

In general, I'm just finding that my local wintertime farmer's market is my new best friend.  I was able to get dried cranberries from a vendor there - usually this would be a no-no food because of the way that commercial dried fruits are made, but when you can talk to the person who makes them, you can rule out allergens.  Pretty awesome.  I was also able to find bacon, made with nothing but pork, honey and sea salt.

  • I got a recipe from a friend and adapted it to fit our diet, and it's amazing.  Plus, it's SO filling, by the time I empty my bowl I'm stuffed, but I want to keep eating! It's turkey taco soup.

    Ingredients:

    - 1 lb ground turkey

    - 1 med. jar Pace picante sauce

    - 2 small cans Rotel tomatoes

    - taco seasoning (since the packets have allergens, I made mine by putting garlic powder, onion flakes, paprika, cumin, salt, and mustard seed in my coffee grinder for spices.  I'm a huge wimp when it comes to spicy food, so you can easily kick it up)

    -  2 cans black beans (or 1 can black beans and 1 can corn, if you can eat corn)

    - whatever vegetables you want (last night was potatoes, baby carrots, and broccoli stalks, but it's AMAZING with some zucchini also)

    - chicken stock (if you want it soupier)

    Directions:

    - brown the turkey with half the seasonings (I did this right in the bottom of my big pot because I hate doing dishes, lol)

-once turkey is brown, dump everything else on top, along with the rest of the seasoning.  Bring it to a boil, then let simmer for 20-30 mins or until veggies are done.  You can also brown the meat in a pan and then toss everything in the crock pot if you want.

I serve it over brown rice, and add some extra chicken stock so the rice soaks up the juices and flavors.  Like I said, this dish is ridiculously filling and makes a ton of food.  A TON.  I'll be eating the leftovers for days, but I don't care because they're so delicious!

  • We went to a naturalpathic doctor last week and had a food ntolerance test done on me and LO, so we are just awaiting the results.  My regular doctor said they wouldn't do the testing when LO is so young ... so I went elsewhere to hopefully get some answers, I'm thinking for sure dairy and maybe soy are the problems.  I went dairyfree 3 weeks ago and she is a whole new kid, no more rash, much happier and less vomiting but her stools are still very mucousy and she continue to vomit  a lot and doesn't sleep.... we'll see what the dr says when the results come back!  I made these dairy-free scones (recipe from https://www.foodallergymama.com/) and they were delicious!

  • we've been dairy and soy-free for about 2 weeks now, egg-free for about a week.  things are so much better!  still waiting for his skin to heal and his poop to start looking better, but he's no longer all rash-y after eating, spits up a normal amount if at all, and doesn't fuss as much at each feeding, yay.

i'm still super new to this, but my staple dish so far is fried rice.  cook some rice, chop up some meat (turkey, sausage, ham, whatever i have on hand), put the meat and some frozen veggies in a pot, add the rice, season however you want, and you're done.  i used to use eggs too, just scramble them first.
