Baby Names

Kai????

I've always liked this name for a boy, but I wonder if when you hear it, you automatically think of a Polynesian or Asian person? Cause my LO will be probably be blonde hair, blue eyed and white as white can be. haha.

Re: Kai????

  • I like the name Kai!  I know it is popular in Hawaii but it is also a Scandinavian name so that is what I think of first.

  • I know a Kai and he is Asian so I guess that is what I "think of" with the name.  But I think it's a good name and who says you have to go with the norm!
  • I know of a Kai whose father is half Asian (Hawaiian), but I do think it's a cute name!
    11 months old! #andintoeverything
  • I know a Kai that is not Asian.  I like this name a lot and don't automatically think Hawaiian.
  • I really like Kai, but my DH shot it down :(

  • I love Kai.

As an alternative, you could name your son Malachi and call him "Kai."

  • I have several acquaintances who've named their kids Kai in the past few years.  Only 1 is of Asian (Chinese-American) heritage so I don't automatically equate it with a certain racial or ethnic background.  It does seem to be growing in popularity though (at least around here) but it's still not as bad as the Aiden/Braden/Kaden thing.

  • I think of a cute hawaiian surfer guy lol Smile

    Definately picture dark features though.

  • I don't.  I have a friend with a blonde haired little boy named Kai.

  • I have a friend who named her little boy Kai, he has fair skin, light eyes and brown hair.  I really like it, I think it is very cute!

  • I love it! I have 2 friends that named their son Kai, one is blonde hair blue eyes & the other is 1/2 white/hispanic. Both are adorable! The blonde ones full name is Kai Noah (as one name, Kainoah) but they call him Kai.
  • Eh, I dislike this name in general. I think it sounds alright, but looks downright stupid.

  • There were four babies named Kai in my new mom's yoga class.  Each of them thought they were being original.

This is kind of what I think of when I hear Kai.

I really don't like this name, but obviously I'm in the minority here.  I don't necessarily think of an asian pacific child, I more think of pot-smoking, new agey parents.

  • The Kai I knew was blonde haired and blue eyed!

I love the name Kai...it is actually on our list!

  • Despite knowing the name is Polynesian in origin, it's also one of several spellings for King Arthur's foster-brother, known variously as Kay, Cai, and Kai, so I tend to think first of the Round Table knight.

  • LOVE IT! My son's name is Malachi....and we call him Kai for short. It's beautiful. Strange that you think "Asian" as my first thought is that it's an abbreviation for something else. In our case, biblical.

Waterfly always beats me to these posts. I don't think Asian, I think Arthurian legend. But, there Kai or Cai is pronounced (Kay). Is that how you are pronouncing it or are you pronouncing it Kye? My nephew is Malachi and they call him Kye. But when I see it spelled Kai- I still think Arthurian legend and not Malachi because of the spelling.

  • Considered this name myself, and I also really like unusual names. I've known a Kai and a Kaj (pronounced the same way), both white boys. You can also go with Cai, which is less common. If you google it, it'll tell you there are about 20 different origins, including Latin, Welsh, Scandinavian, and Chinese.

If you're more into Kai, there is a list of possible origins of the name- many which aren't Asian.

    I also like Malachi.

  • I think of Kai Ryssdal from Marketplace on most NPR stations.

    He's fairly caucasian looking...
