Winded??

I ran for the first time today since getting my BFP earlier this week, I was SO winded (I have been running 30-40mi/week until now) I cannot believe how immediate the effects were. My HR was a little higher and pace was slower.

Swimming has been fine all week, but I really want to keep running. I hope it gets better, any advice from avid/distance runners?

Thanks!

Re: Winded??

  • Do what feels right. If you're winded, slow down and catch your breath. Keep running as much as you can, but don't be surprised when you're just less able. It's normal, and it can hit early and hard.

  • Yes...I found that it does get better.  I ran all the way through my pregnancy, as well as swam and rode (inside on the trainer).  The first tri was the hardest as far as fatigue and heartrate while running.  I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that I was trying to run my normal pace since I didn't really feel pregnant yet.

  • this was actually the first early symptom i had and was the reason i thought i was pregnant before i had missed my period.  i tried to push through it for the first 3 weeks, but it never got better for me and the all day sickness set in.  i plan to try to pick it back up once this sickness is over (fingers crossed it ends soon).  My heart rate has just been so much higher than before my BFP!

This was the first thing I noticed too! (before my BFP) I was winded walking up two flights of steps, I was like "whoa, weird" So I ran again today and slowed WAY down. It was still a struggle, but my HR was approx. 10bpm lower so it was better.

I'm finding swimming is FINE and  I can still go at a moderate pace and it's easy...so I'll find a way to do that a few more days per week.

Just hoping I don't have to give up running!

    Thanks, Ladies!

OMG, me too! I said to H "this can't be happening this early" I'm not sure he believes how changed my body already is (HR & lungs) my HR before I started running was 93bpm (usually in the 70s)

How are you feeling, btw? Are you over on the October Board? 1st Tri?

My HR is normally higher anyways, trying to stay out of Z4 when running will be a nice challenge!!  I did ride for an hour yesterday- most likely my last.  I was so tired af first, but it could have been my lack of bike fitness these days too!  I think I'll miss my bike the most.  :(  Spin or the trainer just doesn't do it for me.

Overall I'm feeling fine- I did want to pass out by 2pm today and took a 3 hr nap!  What about you?
(I've mostly been on the Oct board, 1st Tri and here.  Nursery and baby gear is ok too)

  • The shortness of breath was my first symptom too, and -- while it doesn't get better -- it does sort of become your new normal. I "ignored" it and kept running -- albeit at a slower pace (about an extra minute per mile, give or take). I actually find that working out helps boost my lung capacity -- so I just think about how much worse I'd sound if I weren't exercising!
