Special instructions for being out in the sun while pregnant?

So, we live in Florida near the beach (moved here less than a year ago). The weather is already starting to get GORGEOUS and I know I'll want to be out soaking up some sun a lot before July. Are there special instructions for being out in the sun while pregnant? I know it's not smart to just "bake" out in the sun ever and I try to be cautious and not overdo it, but I feel so much better when I have a little color. Is there a certain type of sunscreen I should use? Should I limit my time in the sun? Will my skin be more sensitive? TIA!

  • I don't really know. I think I read that your skin can get a little more sensitive. Eh, I was out there today soaking it up. Felt so good! I straddled one of those lounge chairs and had the back up a bit so that I could sort of lay on my stomach (I miss sleeping that way). Ahhh...

  • I'd go crazy with the sunscreen and wear a floppy hat and sunglasses!  Drink lots and lots of water too----you don't want to get dehydrated.  We just put a pool in last Summer so I'm dying for the weather to change and the water to warm up!!!!

  • When my SIL was pregnant her Dr told her to just make sure to use sunscreen and avoid getting too hot. As long as she cooled off in the water every now and then and took a few breaks in the shade she was fine.

  • According to my baby books the way you tan can totally change while pregnant.  Tongue Tied

I've never known anyone IRL that had an issue, but I hope I'm not one of the ones that just tans in splotchy patterns.   I'd take it easy at first to see how sensitive you are.

  • Sunscreen, water and try not too get too hot! The usual I would say.

I do know with my DS if I ever just sat in the sun for a bit (towards the WAY end of my pregnancy) even if I had a shirt on I would get little red dots almost like pimples all over my belly and they would itch, then go away anhour or two after I came in.

  • We just moved from the beach and during my last pregnancy I was WAY more sensitive to the sun.  The umbrella will be your new best friend in the next few months!

  • melasma can be triggered by sun exposure.  So, I'd say lots of sunscreen and make sure you reapply it!

  • I'd wear a lot of sunscreen and speak to your doctor. There is a "pregnancy veil" that some woman get from being in the sun while pregnant that sometimes doesn't go away.
  • My skin seemed to be more sensitive when I was pregnant last time, so I made sure to wear a lot of sunscreen.  I also always wore a hat so that I wouldn't get melasma.

  • I'd be careful, because your skin can definately have a different reaction to the sun, including splotchy spots and the "pregnancy mask".

I would also like to add that I'm totally jealous sitting here thinking of you soaking in the sun when I'm watching the skies add to our already 15+ inches of fresh snow. Urgh!
