Post your tips, tricks & advice for Eating Out with LO

And go!

We never let LO walk into the restaurant by himself.  I find that when we did, he would just want to walk & explore and not want to sit down.  Now we carry him and and let him sit/stand with us in the booth (always request a booth!) until after they come to take our order.  He'll play with the silverware, placemats, napkins etc for a few quiet minutes.

Once we place our order & they bring our drinks then we finally put him in the highchair.  He's really into people watching right now, so he's content for a good 10 minutes just taking it all.  And I've learned that if he's quite, do NOT bother him...to talk to him, to ask him if he wants something to eat...nothing.  Don't distract him when he's content!

  • Our guy is pretty content just people watching.  He usually sits in a booster at a booth or high chair and is happy either coloring (trying to), playing with toy cars, watching people, or if he's hungry munching on some cheerios to hold him till the food comes.

  • Evie is very laid back at restaurants. As long as she has some food and people to pay attention to her, she's good.

  • Between when we order and the food comes we carry her around the restaurant to let her check things out.

Don't put her in the high chair till the food comes (sits in our lap, stands in the booth, being carried around)

Bring a couple favorite foods with us (frozen peas and some crackers usually) to tide her over if hungry before the food comes and/or she isn't into the restaurant food.

Sit outside when the weather is good - more to watch.

  • We never put him in the high chair until the food is on the table.  I give LO snacks and such while we wait for the food to come.  Once the food comes, he's too occupied with eating to even notice he's confined to his high chair.

  • DD LOVES to drink water out of the "grown-up" cups or glasses.  This usually keeps her entertained for a good long time.

She likes to say "hi" to the other restaurant customers.  We do let her walk around the restaurant before the food comes.  She's really good about holding my hand or DH's hand as we walk her around.  And it's not a big deal when we have to put her in the high chair--I think she even likes it sometimes because it's different from her high chair at home.

  • I've never done any little tricks? I just put them in the high chair/booster and they sit until we eat.

  • We usually only take him to lunch since his night routine starts early.  I always have plenty of snacks for him and he does pretty well.

  • Both girls usually play with crayons/paper at first (I always keep some in my bag in case the restaurant we're at doesn't offer them). Next comes healthy snacks. By then dinner has usually arrived and they eat. Then we give them a toy (mini cans of play doh, travel sized Water Wow Doodle Books, etc..) or a cell phone (on lock) to play with.
