Golfing ok while Pregnant?

With Spring just around the corner and a few abnormally warm, sunny days, I am having golf fever!  Does anyone know if it's safe to golf while pregnant?

  • Why wouldn't it be? Stay hydrated.

  • I don't see why not. Its not strenuous nor does it involve high impact or contact.

  • I'd have to agree golfing is pretty low impact so it should be ok.  Doesnt hurt to double check with your caregiver though.

And typically if its something you've always done then there shouldnt be a problem at all.  I mean joggers and runners can continue to run throughout their pregnancy with no problem.  Doctors just wouldn't suggested starting a jogging routine if you've never done it before.

  • I think it should be fine, albeit maybe a little awkward to get a good stance with your bump Smile

  • It is fine :) My DH's mom golfed in a tournament the day before he was born....I want to golf this spring since I know it will not happen for a while after the baby is born :)

  • Last pregnancy I went to the driving range with DH and the twisting motion of swing really didn't feel comfortable on my belly. I didn't like it at all. I guess just listen to your body. It will let you know if it's a good idea or  not!
  • I don't know why it wouldn't be, but the twisting of my body, mainly while driving, is what concerned me.

Agreed. You may have to stick the club out a bit further than you are used to.

  • I just went to the driving range yesterday!  It felt great to hit some balls.  Make sure to stretch before hand so you are loose and then just be careful that you are taking controlled hits and not pulling anything!  Take you time and you should be fine.  Rest every so often so that you aren't getting winded and have fun!

Like PP said, listen to your body. If the motion is uncomfortable, don't do it- but I don't think it hurts to try.

  • I have actually had a lot of friends say they played their best golf while pregnant!

IMO its probably fine if you like it!!! Smile

what on earth is supposed to happen if you put your hands over your head? I've done step class (with arms over head), jumping jacks, some supervised light weights with hands over my head, I put things away on shelves over my head.

From what I've seen online that's an old pregnancy myth- nothing will happen if you put your hands over your head (except if you leave them there long enough your arms will get tired).

This. I play in a golf league with 2 friends, one golfed while pregnant a few years ago and had her best season. The other girl, who happens to be my best friend, and I are both pregnant and plan to play this summer. I may not be able to do the last month, but I plan to play as long as it is comfortable.

Actually, it doesn't.  Also, one of the first things that my Dr told me at my first appt was do not believe the myth of putting your arms above your head.  The baby is in no way, shape, or form connected in a way that putting your arms above your head would cause harm.  Just fyi

  • Thanks all!  Now I'm really looking forward to it!!  I'll for sure just play as long as I'm comfortable.  It just may be my best year in golf ;)
