Donating BM

I had a hefty freezer stash before returning to work. In Nov/Dec I had a really busy work schedule and I remained vigilient about double pumping with my (then) hospital grade pump every 3 hrs. Now, I don't work near as much ( maybe 2 days a week) and I have got way to much milk in my deep freezer. Will a milk bank take milk that is a few months old even if has been properly stored? I know I will need to go through a screening process. Is there any way they can screen my milk to make sure it is safe? I know it is but if I was a mother giving my preemie donated milk I would want to know for sure it was safe.

Thanks.

Re: Donating BM

  • Since milk banks are picky, take a while to get approved, and sometimes charge people for milk, I checked out Eats on Feet on Facebook (it is play on the Meals of Wheels name).

They have different groups in different areas and will allow you to donate milk to needy momma's.

We don't have a milk bank around here and I can barely pump enough for 2 bottles a day, but thought I would share!

  • I found these rules - which say milk can be as old as 10 months.  They must do testing for quality before using it, because some of my old milk didn't look so hot after 4 months.   https://www.helpinghandsbank.com/process.php

  • Anyone know how to be the one to get milk? Do you have to go through a lengthy process also? Id love to go back to BM only. Is the demand high? Obviously Id love for a mom with a preemie or something to get much needed BM.

  • i donated through milkshare and found it incredibly rewarding!  if you have milk that you won't be using, i highly encourage donation!

  • As a mom who is feeding her son donated BM, found thru both Eats on Feets on FB and Milkshare, I commend you for at least considering it. I would also call your local children's specialty hospital and see if you can direct donate there. Any way you slice it, there are lots of children out there who are either preemies, or have genetic disorders, or who are intolerant of formula, or who are children of moms like me who have been diagnosed with low supply and just want to give their babies the wonderful qualities of bm. Good luck to you!
