DD and I are accompanying DH to his conferece in Orlando next week. We are going to speand a few days each at Universal and Disney. Any recs for faves, must sees, don't bothers, places to eat, etc?
I realize that DD isn't going to remember much of this, but she is still free and a visit to Harry Potter World is my 40th bday gift!
Re: univeral and/or disney fans
Sorry never been there. Just want to say Sienna would totally enjoy a disney vacation even at this age. She is so into Mickey & the gang. She has the plush toys, every one of them.
Have an awesome time & take lots of pics!
We have not been there since 2000 (5 year anniversary) but I recall that Magic Kingdom was geared more for the little ones. They have closed Mickey's Toontown (boo) and that was really geared towards the little ones but many of the Magic Kingdom rides are rated for Preschoolers. If she likes animals, Animal Kingdom is great too. Check out their webpage https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/
If you can, pick up "Birmbum's Guide to Disney World with Kids". I know in the older versions, they did a great job of labeling age appropriate rides/restaraunts/where to go see the parades, etc. It really helped me when I took my son, who was 8 at the time, to get the most out of our trip.
OMG - just realized it has been 10 years since I've been to either Disney park. Note to self - need to fix this soon.
It's been 10 years for us too!! Only L has gone, and not going to wait till they are all old enough to remember or we won't all be there!! We're planning for the next 12-24 months as our target. Somebody gave me this site in my planning and it has lots of great tips and info:

Enjoy, Disney is fun!
First off, I am jealous. I want to go. I LOVE Disneyworld. There is something magical about watching a LO see all the princesses for the first time and believe it is all real. Our last visit was in 2007. I like the 4d shows with Mickey's PhilharMagic being my favorite.
Do the Fast pass at Disney. It will cut your wait time. My older girls loved Universal more than Disney. I think it was because the rides were more thrilling. We have been talking about how we would like the Harry Potter world.
Seems like several bumpies want to go. Wouldn't a Disney Bumpie GTG be Grand!!!
Have fun!!
Last time we were at Universal our eldest enjoyed the Dr. Seuss section. It was geared more towards little ones than the rest of the park. Have fun!
You guys all have me beat - it has been almost 25 years since I have been!
Animal Kingdom is definitely on the list, as is the Magic Kingdom. We will probably do Epcot as well.
In Universal I want to take DD to Dr. Seuss Land and the Curious George area. Like I said, Harry Potter world is for me, but hopefully she will enjoy it.
Thanks for the tips.
Hi,
My husband and I are Disney Vacation Club members, and go 2-3 times a year. Feel free to shoot me questions.
Ok, I had to edit my post, I see that your daughter is about 1.5 years old. That makes a HUGE difference on which parks to go to and what to do. I can definitely tell you which restaurants to go to, which to avoid, and which to call right now to make a reservation.
If you want to go to a park where you can enjoy it with your daughter, I HIGHLY recommend the Magic Kingdom. You DD will be able to go on SO many rides!
I don't know what a 1.5 year old can do, we have a little one on the way so I'm inexperienced in the toddler department, but at MK there is the Bippity Boppity Boutique. IT IS UNREAL. I mean seriously, the kids go in there and get pampered in STYLE, and choose outfits and become princesses- they get their their hair done with sparkles, nails...the whole nine yards. You will see little girls walking through the parked decked out from head to toe. IT IS SICKKKK!! Again, you have to make an appointment for this- don't expect to just walk in. Go online and google it, tons of info will show up about it.
Only downside, is that the food at MK sucks a big one. We find it to be border line gross- and most Disney maniacs like myself think that as well.
You can go to Tony's, in town square (based on Lady and the Tramp)- people like it, but we found it to be below the quality of airplane food. Just my opinion. Here you will HAVE to have a reservation.
There are quick places to eat, though- more like fast food diners- I love them. Cosmic Ray's is the best. It's big, and has tons of choices- good and bad (fried). So you can get ribs, hamburgers (and they have a KILLER toppings station), grilled chicken, roasted half-chicken, salads, etc. I like it there, but it's not gourmet, that's for sure! There's entertainment inside too, for the kiddies.
Another SUPER helpful website is one called www.disboards.com. But be prepared to get sucked into their forums- it's an awesome, amazing resource and guide.
I would avoid EPCOT, as tempting as it may be to go there- there's not too much for a little one to do, and may be more frustrating for the two of you.
Animal Kingdom is pretty good- people either love or hate it. If you like zoos, you'll like AK. It's like walking through a Disney zoo.
I am tired and drawing a blank, there is SOOO much to tell you. Give me more info about what you want out of Disney and what your likes/dislikes are and I can help you out more.
Fast Pass is WONDERFUL, however, you must be staying on a Disney property to enjoy this perk. Basically, you take your Key To The World card (your room key and charge card) to a kiosk that offers Fast Pass. You will know Fast Pass rides because they are marked clearly on the maps/brochures with a big "FP" and also it's noted at the ride itself, under the wait times. Stick that sucker in the kiosk and a ticket pops out with a return time- a window of time during the day when you can come back to that ride and enter in on an alternate, and MUCH shorter line for that ride.
It's awesome, not doubt, and worth staying on a Disney property solely for this perk. Your 1.5 - 2 hour wait time can be cut down easily to 15-30 minute wait- or less.
SCORE.
