High-Risk Pregnancy

Failed my 3 hour test--GD Help

I recently failed my 3 hour test. My 2 hour number was 169 which was higher than it should have been and my 1 hour number was 181, which was 2 points too high. The other values were perfect and in range.

Needless to say, I'm frustrated and overwhelmed. I was tested early because I am overweight and my family history. My father was an insulin dependent diabetic and my mom is diabetic also (until recently she was able to control with diet and minimal medication.) I have a history of PCOS, but had no insulin resistance problems or any hint of blood sugar problems until this pregnancy.

I am trying to schedule my appointment with the specialist, but since I didn't have GD my last pregnancy, I don't even know what all I should ask or where to begin. I'm also concerned where this is going to leave me after pregnancy.

Any advice or help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance ladies.

  • You will meet with both a counselor and a nutritionist. They will probably monitor your numbers for a week before deciding whether/not you need medication. You will get a monitor and monitor your blood sugar at least 4 times a day. Everyone's #s seem to differ slightly- mine need to be <95 fasting then <140- 1 hour after eating. I am able to eat 2 carb units for breakfast, 2 for snacks, then 4 for both lunch and dinner. I am diet controlled (knock on wood) so it has not been terribly bad. I can still have goodies/sweets just not as much as I would really want! Good luck!

  • After finding out I had GD I watched a GD video at my doctors office, they gave me some eating guidlines and gave me a perscription for my meter and strips. I have been testing for about a week (my next doc appoitment is saturday.). I have been having trouble with my fasting numbers the past couple mornings so I am a little nervous about that.

My meeting with the nuritionist isn't until March 7th! This was as soon as I could make it which is only like 6 weeks before my due date!

  • I completely understand you being overwhelmed and frustrated. Diabetes in general is a frustrating disease. I'm a type II and I was no insulin dependent before getting pregnant. Since I got pregnant, I've had to adjust to taking 4 shots a day and keeping my diet even more strict than it was before. I also have PCOS and unfortunately, the PCOS coupled with the GD and family history and being overweight is like the perfect storm for developing Type II. That's the bad news.

The good news is that you can totally control it if you have the will power. Depending on how high your numbers are on a regular basis - fasting and after meals - will probably determine what they will have you do. You will definitely get a monitor and you'll probably have to check first thing in the morning, and 1-2 hours after every meal. Once they figure out what is going on in your body - they'll either have you try to control with diet, put you on oral meds, or put you on insulin. Just remember that whatever they have you do is to ensure your baby is healthy.

They will give you a diet to follow too. You'll basically have to count all your carbs for meals and make sure you're getting enough - but not too much. My regimen is 45 carbs per meal (breakfast I can only handle 20 since I got into 2nd and 3rd trimester) and about 15-20 per snack. I also have a bedtime snack of about 35-40 carbs. Once you get in the groove of things - it feels good. The problem is - your body is constantly changing. Your placenta is growing, causing you to get more resistant to insulin and your hormones are all out of whack - which can also screw with your numbers. It's a constant adjustment and you have to be willing to do whatever you can to ensure the health of your baby.

My main advice would be - stay dedicated and make sure you have doctors that you can trust and rely on to get back to you with questions you have on a daily basis. If you meet with doctors and you don't like them for any reason - ask for another one. You need to surround yourself with supportive people that understand what you are going through and will be there to help you as much as they can. If they brush you off - you don't want them treating you.

If you have any specific questions, please feel free to PM me. I have been dealing with Diabetes for about 7 years now and I have learned so much from all my doctors that I feel like I could teach this!!

Hope this helps. Keep your head up and try to stay calm and dedicated :)
