Adoption

Question Re: Adoption and Therapy/Medication

I was reading the qualifications to apply to certain international adoption programs, and several countries disqualified potential adoptive families if either of the adoptive parents had been in therapy recently or took medications for a medical condition.

I've been in therapy for about 6 months trying to deal with IF.  Will programs discriminate against me b/c of this?  I also take Synthroid for hypothyroidism - please tell me that wouldn't be something I'd be discriminated against for - that would be so, so silly...

I've been wanting to go on anti-depressants b/c I've had such a hard time w/ IF, but the sole reason I haven't is b/c I didn't want it to reflect badly in my medical records.

Re: Question Re: Adoption and Therapy/Medication

  • So much depends on the country with IA.  What country (or countries) are you considering?

  • We adopted from Korea, which is historically one of the strictest countries with regards to mental illness. I had seen a therapist at a couple of times in my life--once when I was at a major crossroads in life, and later to discuss my infertility (my therapist is also an adoptive mother because of infertility issues).

It was considered OK because it was a situational issue and not related with any diagnosis of mental illness. I had to have a letter from my therapist describing the nature of my issues/therapy and the duration.

The Synthroid shouldn't be an issue. Hypothyroid is highly treatable.
