RSV update, would u move vaccines?

So Coop's RSV continues to get worse everyday.  He has gone from wheezing off and on, to wheezing constantly.  He is hanging in there pretty tough, and minus being a little more tired is acting pretty normal.  The albuterol they gave him for the wheezing doesn't seem to do much more that make him over tired (you know where they are exhausted, but bouncing off the walls)  I've only been giving it to him at night, but had to give him a dose already today.  My mom has stayed with me the past few days and DH came home today.  DH also has some upper respiratory junk, so yet again our house should be quarantined.

Coop has his 6 month check up and shots tomorrow morning, is there any reason I should postpone his shots?  I'm of course going to talk to the doctor about this, but wanted to go in educated and ready to ask some specific questions.  Any thoughts?

Re: RSV update, would u move vaccines?

  • Your doctor might not want to give him his shots while he's sick anyway. Esp if he's on pain meds or other meds that might compromise the immune response. Definitely talk to them about it.

  • I would postpone the vaccines.  Also, I would up the nebulizer treatments.  When Casey had RSV/was wheezing we were instructed to give him the neb every 3 hours around the clock (especially at night).  Good luck and I hope he feels better soon.

  • I would question the sanity of any pediatrician who would be ok giving vaccines to an infant with RSV.  Our pedi has put them off by a few days before just for a mild teething fever (though I think that was a bit overkill on her part).  Her general rule is that if it's an illness that requires medication, or consists of a fever over 101, we put off the vaccines for about a week after they get better.  Their immune systems are already working overtime when they're sick, so it's not really a good idea to add vaccines to the mix and make them work even harder.

**Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, I do not play one on tv, and I have no official medical training other than CPR and minor first aid.  ;)

  • I always thought it was common practice to postpone vacs when the child is ill.

  • Thanks Ladies!  They did end up postponing his vacs.  I also thought it was common practice, but I know my niece recently had her shots when she had a double ear infection.  Maybe it depends on the illness or doctor.  Coop's pedi office always seem to err on the side of caution (which is why I like them!)

His wheezing is still bad so they switched him from liquid breathing treatments to the breathing treatment machine (nebulizer, sp?).  We hadn't seen our normal doc when we in the 1st time, but apparantly the machine treatments have less of a side effect (would have been nice to know this!). So we now get to enertain the little guy every 4 hours while we hold a mask on his face...anyone have any tips for this?  We gave him his 1st treatment in the office, he obviously wasn't a fan...we tried to distract him, but since nursing and his paci are his 2 top comforter tools he was pissed!
