They are awake and alert? Ds is about 5 weeks, he is tracking objects and making eye contact. I am at a loss as what to do when he is awake. I don't want to over stimulate him but when I let him chill I feel like I am ignoring him! Help me!
I let MJ sit in his seat and I just talk to him, even if it's just telling him what i'm doing. He's heard all about folding laundry, sending emails etc.. I know he has no idea what I'm saying but I figure it can't hurt..
We usually do tummy time. I know some people don't start this right away but we did and I think its paid off because he is very strong and can hold his own head up on his own for quite awhile! We started by doing on our chest tummy time and now that he is bigger we additionally do this on the boppy on the bed after a feeding, or in the bassinet part of his pack n play with a couple bold colored soft toys in there that he loves to stare at if he is really alert.
We talk to Sofie, and I'm going to start doing non-chest tummy time this week I think. Her daddy likes to put her in her vibrating seat and talk to her and move the toys on the overhead bar too.
Dee,
Mommy to: Sofia, born 2/9/11, as well as three dogs, two cats and a multitude of chinchillas.
I have her sit up, I play with her arms, I sing to her and move her legs, carry her around the house and tell her about the laundry I'm doing and I also let her siblings hug her and kiss her face. She loves to look at them. She's never awake for long really. When she starts getting fussy I know she's had enough of Awake Time and it's time to put her to sleep.
Hehe, Xander is wide awake laying on the couch behind me right now. He is checking out the lines and pattern on the couch. Most of the time I am holding him, talking to him and even making faces and stuff. But sometimes I just let him be. I think it is important NOT to entertain him all the time. It reminds me of self soothing to fall asleep.... they need to learn to fall asleep on their own and he is learning to keep himself occupied. I don't have time (not meaning that I have zero time for him) to keep in my arms and entertain him 24/7 so I think it is nice that he can chill out by himself for awhile without me being in his face all the time. He also seems to like to lay in his pack and play bassinet with the music going and looking at the pattern on the side or the mobile on top.
I have to admit, I like that he has some awake time in the middle of the night because usually that is when we have our time together since the other kids are asleep.

When she is awake and calm, I try to put her down on the boppy or the swing to give my arms a break! I sing to her or read her books (or emails or whatever I'm reading online), but even that feels silly after awhile. I also spend time trying to get her to smile while talking to her and telling her how pretty she is.

when DS is awake, i talk to him, make silly faces at him, put him in his gym, swing or bouncer. he just stares at the bright colors and entertains himself! he also loves to look at his reeflection in the mirror on his gym!
Ellie has an extensive book collection and we are slowly working our way through reading each book... My mom started reading right away with my siblings and I and I thought it sounds like a good idea, this way she has something to look at if she wants plus she can hear our voices more and more. She also enjoys tummy time or sitting on our laps (or in a bouncy seat) and watching the dogs play.
I sit him up next to me on the couch while I work and talk to him or I put him in his swing and he just looks around. Other times I will sit there and be more active with him but for now there isn't a whole lot we can do. I haven't done tummy time yet since his umbilical cord is hanging on by a thread and I am waiting for it to fall off. I know they can do tummy time with it still on but the stump is really sharp and I personally wouldn't want that jabbing my stomach.
I put LO in her gym for tummy time and time on her back... she loves the lights and hanging toys (& mirror). We also have time with her laying on my legs... I read to her and she does her favorite past time... looking at the ceiling fan Oh the life of a newborn.
Re: So what do you do with your lo when...
