3rd Trimester

XP: Marine Corps Marathon : Copy from Health & Exercise

The opening day to sign up for the MCM is on the 23rd of this month.  I'm due the middle of April, and am considering running my first marathon with my best friend.  Will I be okay to start training?  Goal is to start running in May just to get back in shape. Then I think I would need to seriously start my training in June. I ran track and cross country in college, so I am not worried about not being able to run, just whether or not my body will be ready...

Do you think that is enough time to allow myself to get into shape, or am I being stupid?

  • Well I saw if you were active before becoming pg. you should be good. You have 5 months to prepare. And there are a lot of begainner programs to learn from.

Good luck. I was in the Marine Corps in DC & Quantico. So I wish you the best.

  • I think you're crazy, but not because of anything pregnancy related! Wink  I am not a runner, if something was chasing me trying to eat me, I would be dead long before I made half marathon distance Sad

  • Considering that this is your first marathon, I wouldn't do it. You have NO idea how you are going to feel after having a baby and training for a marathon is like a having a second full time job. If I were you, I would sign up for the half at MCM or just do a smaller, less exciting one for your first. I think you will have a lot going on as a new mom and trying to train for a marathon is going to be crazy. I am due any day now and got PG right after my first marathon and I am still wondering if training for a fall one is a good choice.

  • I'm due in mid-May and I'm singing up for the MCM. I've run half marathons and loved it but this would be my first complete marathon. I made a pact w/DH that he'd really be prepared to take on a lot of baby shifts so that I can really train well for this event. I've followed Hal Higdon's training schedules for halfs in the past and it's been great to follow along and build up my endurance. I *do* think it's going to be tougher than it would be if we weren't *just* coming out of pregnancy but I certainly don't think you're off your rocker for wanting to do it. I say do it if you are really jonesing too. Half Marathons are also great distance races and feel great afterwards if you haven't run in longer than a year or so. Just depends on what you're comfortable with. Good Luck!

  • Just my 2 cents, but I have done the MCM - it was first (and so far only) marathon.  I was in fantastic shape, had done a couple of halves, and several other smaller races.  The MCM is rewarding, but no easy under-taking.  It is very hilly in the first 10 miles.  If you are in great shape, and have the dedication, I'm sure you can do it.  But as an MCM veteran, just wanted to share my experience :)
