Moby Wrap changes?

I used a Moby all the time with DD four years ago and I just, with a great deal of excitement, opened the moby I'll be using with DS (about 10 lbs and 5 weeks old).  I'm noticing that the material is much less stretchy and that on their website (I wanted to double check my wrapping technique) they no longer show the side sitting pose.  My little guy was already snug in side sit and asleep.  I just tried him on the hug hold, but he likes to face out and is so much more comfortable in side sit.  Are there safety reasons that anyone knows about that caused the change?

TIA

  • I bought mine in April/May 2010 and the instructions show a "sling hold" - is that the side position you are talking about? there is also a "lotus" which is outward facing, but I have never tried it.

  • Sling hold sounds right.  I'm glad yours still shows it!  Little man has been very very fussy and at the momrnt he's sleeping peacefully in the moby, so that makes me feel better!

    Thanks!

  • Moby removed some holds because they are unsafe (the back carry in a stretchy), difficult to do correctly (the cradle carry) or not ideal for baby's spine development (forward facing).

In the last few years, there have been changes in what the babywearing community promotes as safe - better info on infant development and a greater concern for safety/liability issues.   The cradle carry (which is what I think you mean by side sit) is safe when done correctly but my guess is that moby didn't want to take the risk of being sued if someone did it incorrectly.

This makes sense.  I just found the EU site, which shows all of the carries.  Thanks!
