Need help quick! Tamiflu while pregnant??

My 5 year old has Type B of the flu.  He is MISERABLE!  I've been taking care of him the most (my husband coaches and was on the baseball field all weekend); today I took a break from him a bit so my husband could take care of him for the bulk of the day.  I took a couple of naps and noticed a massive headache along with burning eyes.  I decided to call the weekend line for my doctor's office to see what I could do for prevention.

The on call doc prescribed my tamiflu which is in category C (I've checked!).  I asked her if this will do any harm to the baby and she just answered, "no".  I don't like this doctor near as much as my own!  Anyway, has anyone ever taken tamiflu while pregnant?  I'm so nervous about it, but can't afford to be knocked on my butt for the flu and the risks of complications!

Ugh.

  • per my med book..."Tamiflu should be prescribed to a pregnant woman only if the case justifies the potential benefit of the fetus."

Getting the flu does not outweigh the risks in my opinion...I wouldn't take it.

  • I don't know if I would take it for prevention, especially without talking to your OB first.  But I will say that I wound up sick with the flu in the first few days after I found out about this pregnancy.  I was really sick and had trouble breathing and spiked a fever that wasn't coming down with Tylenol.  The doctor and my OB both agreed that I should take the Tamiflu and it helped me to get over the worst symptoms within a few days.

If I were you, I'd talk to your doctor.  Did you get a flu shot?  I would call your OB in the morning and see what they suggest.  From my understanding, the Tamiflu targets an enzyme in the early stage of the virus and is effective up to within the first 48 hours of the onset of symptoms.

Good luck and I hope your son feels better soon!

  • Thanks for all the advice! My doctor's office open here in a bit, so I'm going to call and hopefully talk to him or his nurses about what I should do.  There is so much confusing information out there about Tamiflu and pregnancy!  It's hard to make a decision, especially since I haven't run any fever yet.
