Success after IF

NSAIR related - Clicky re: friend etiquette

You go out to dinner with a long time friend that you see every 2-3 months.  You split the $36 bill.  Your friend puts a $20 bill and you put your card (you forgot to get cash) for the waiter.  When the change comes back, you take your card and give $18 to your friend.  You leave without either of you realizing the mistake.  (You were owed $18 and your friend was owed $2). The next morning you text your friend.. what do you say?[Poll]

  • If it was a really good friend (with whom I have a joking relationship), I'd probably say something like, "Hey, you owe me dessert next time we go out!"  Otherwise, I'd probably just let it go.  Chances are she'll realize it at some point when she goes to pay for something.

  • I probably wouldn't make an effort to say anything.  I agree with JillRock, she'll probably notice it and I think this kind of stuff has a way of working itself out with good friends anyway.

  • does the $36 include tip?

I would let it go and not say anything. and I find it odd that your friend didn't react to the $18 change she got. who pays $2 for dinner? seriously.

  • I'm the one that got the $2 change.  We were busy chatting and I honestly didn't even look at what she gave me and just put it in my bag.  I was suprised when I got a text asking for me to send her a check.  I've been friends with her for 15 years and kind of thought that she'd know I'd be good for it when I see her again (even though I probably wouldn't have even noticed if I were her).  I was kind of surprised and was wondering if I was off base thinking this was a little odd. (This was the bill with the tip included.. neither of us were drinking.. cheap dates).

Wow, I would never ask for a check since you do see each other pretty often. Normally I let it slide but sometimes when someone doesn't have cash on them we do a "you are getting the first round of drinks next time" type of thing.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • I cannot fathom asking someone to send me a check for $16....but maybe she really needs it.  I'd suck it up and send it.

One of my best friends and I go out to eat all the time and always split the check, we both had babies at the same time and while we were on leave we went to lunch (read: totally sleep deprived) and passed the same $20 bill back to each other like 3 times to make sense of who was owed what change, we were so confused.  We ended up getting it right but we still joke about how dumb we were to not be able to figure out the right change.

  • maybe money is really tight for her - i'd send the check for sure --- it is odd but who knows.  If i was the one on her end i would never even bring it up - and if my friend ever mentioned it i'd let her pay next time or something.... in general that's how my friends and i do it - if it's just 2 of us - we'll take turns paying.

She doesn't need the $.  She just got a new car and had a brand new Coach bag with her.  They are doing just fine.  I sent the check this morning.  I don't want to make a stink out of it with her.

  • I think some people are just anal about money things.  I wouldn't think anything of it.
