TMJ doctor recommendations

the teeth I still have are sore, I know I am just clenching like heck in the middle of the night...I was afraid to go back to sleep last night  :-(

I need to figure out if there is anything else I can do before I become the youngest person ever with a full set of dentures.

Re: TMJ doctor recommendations

  • I would go see your regular dentist first before you look for a TMJ specialist.  They can normally try a few things before sending you to see a TMJ specialist (they are really rare and hard to get into)

I already have a bite plate.  When I lived in Detroit I went to specialist and had a specialized plate that was adjusted everytime. I think I need to go back to something like that.

If you have any docs you know about, I would love to get a recommendation! I just cracked one tooth (through the bite plate) which I had to have extracted and I really don't want to lose anymore.

  • We normally send patients to Dr. Steed at the St. Vincent proff. building - I don't know a ton about her, but my patients seem happy enough with her.

Thanks!!!  I like my dentist, but his last two referrals haven't been great!

  • Too bad I didn't see this earlier--I would have asked my dentist today for you.  He's great and I still drive across town to Westfield to see him--Dr. Flannagan at First Impressions Dental Care across from the post office.

  • When mine got really bad in college, I went to the Orofacial Pain Center at the Univ of KY med center in Lexington, KY.  It's far, but it's one of the best places in the country.  Rod Stewart was actually there for an appt the last time I was there.  Yes, THE Rod Stewart.

I saw Dr. Bentoncourt, but he isn't there anymore.  But anyone there will be good.

Oh, and while there I asked what to do if I had an "emergency situation" like the time I bit through my biteguard (told you it was bad) and was afraid to sleep without something.  They told me I could always go buy one of those "moldable" sports mouthpieces at Walmart of somewhere (the kind you dip in hot water to make them fit your teeth) and that would hold me until I could get in to see a doc.

  • I went to Glander Orthodontics in Greenwood for all of my TMJ care.  They were amazing.  My regular dentist got me an NTI device and it's worked well, but I've worn it down so far that it's no longer helping.  TMJ is awful.  Hope you get some relief!
