Daycare vs. In-Home (your house or theirs)

Has anyone switched from regular daycare to in-home?  I am seriously considering looking into it for a variety of reasons... Just curious if anyone switched....how much more $$ was it....why you switched and if it's working out?

Also - thoughts on having someone come to your home versus taking LO to someone's home...what are the things I need to consider??

Re: Daycare vs. In-Home (your house or theirs)

  • D has always been in a home DC. It is actually much less than a center. We love it because there is the continuity with the same person. She loves Miss Bev so much, and vice versa. There are two other kids there, and I like that she is around an older child so she can pick things up/learn from him. Here the actual home and person are licensed - so if we wanted something at our house it would be a nanny kind of thing.

  • Also, check if Ohio has a website that you can research DCP. We do, and that's how I found Miss Bev. I was also able to look at inspection reports. Plus, I was a pre-school teacher in a previous life so I knew a little of what to look for.

  • I had a nanny up until recently. I loved having her come to us. It made my life so much easier. But now that he's 2, I felt he needed to be around other kids so now he goes to an in home. There are pros and cons to every situation!

  • Liz - no advice but I'm very curious to see the answers. When I was pg we only considered daycare facilities - had some friends with bad in home experiences. When I went back to work, I was more open to a nanny or inhome provider but only had a few weeks to find something and interviewing, references etc seemed overwhelming even with the Ohio site and Lakewood site. We liked the dc we put her in in November and were really torn when our first choice facility had a surprise opening. As you know, we decided to make the switch and are very happy we did! Subtle differences but she seems happier. There's a part of me that would still love a nanny I think!
  • I'm in Ohio too and have used a site called startingpoint.org that lists dc providers (even some in-home ones) by location. If someone can to your house, then you would be looking for a nanny. Generally, in home is cheaper than a center and a center is cheaper than a nanny.
  • We have always had an Au Pair care for Sarah and love it. The downside is that there is a person living in our house so you need the space and need to adjust to it. It's been really nice though as she is like a young sister or maybe a daughter for us. She became part of the family quickly. The positive for us is the flexibility it gives us in regards to hours, if Sarah is sick, both DH and I can still both go to work, we don't need to find alternate arrangement for those days that are off for schools but not for work etc. And of course the fact that Sarah has one person who cares for her and just her, it's her job and the reason why she is in the US. Sarah absolutely loves her. She gets Sarah to play with other children every day, on the playground, at the zoo, at playdates, at storytime, so I don't feel Sarah is missing out on interaction with other children.

  • We have both kids in the same in-home DC.  DH demanded this versus going with a large DC, and I am very glad we did.  She is licensed, with 17 years of experience. We found her by looking at the local city's website.   As for an au pair, friends have had a really positive experience with their au pairs, and it was cost effective for them.  But we barely have room for ourselves, much less an au pair.
