milk alternatives

We have always had trouble getting DD to drink much whole milk so I was thinking of trying a milk alternative although I've never tried any of them myself so for those of you who have, what would you recommend trying first?  Soy milk?  Almond?  Is there anything else?  TIA!

Re: milk alternatives

  • My DD has a milk allergy and she drinks SILK soy milk, the one enriched with DHA. It has the same amount of fat as 2%, and it's sweet and yummier to me than other soy milks... she loves it!

  • I agree with the PP that soy milk is always a great alternative. I love buying DS the one with DHA in it, but it is higher priced than the other SILK products.

However, on the other hand, almond milk is my personal favorite. I could drink it all of the time. Mmm. DS also drinks plenty of it.

Lastly, there is always hemp milk and rice milk. Most of the time they are higher priced and harder to find though.

  • My LO is still BFing but our pedi recommended we try giving him cow's milk for lunch (while I'm at work).  He hates it.  He'll drink a little almond milk but he'd rather have water.  I buy the unsweetened kind.  There's also rice milk and goat milk (which I hear is very popular in some other countries and has benefits, but I haven't looked into it yet).

  • We're giving DS almond milk (dairy sensitivity) and he really likes it.

Lord, no wonder he prefers water. That unsweetened stuff is bland as eff. It's also really low in calories and fat, rendering it pretty worthless as a milk substitute if that's what you actually give it for. Great for adults, but not so great for children, IMO.

B drinks Silk almond, the original flavor. We'll give him the vanilla if that's all the store has, and we've bought the unsweetened in a pinch and just added a tiny splash of vanilla syrup to make it palatable.

Rice milk is far too low in calories and fat to be a good substitute. Soy is good, if you don't have issues with LO drinking soy (B gets enough from his food so we limit it with his milk). Hemp is actually the best in terms of calories/fat, but it's harder to find and costs more in general. I don't know how it tastes, but I know a lot of people use it and like it.

  • We do soy, but its our only option due to a moderate Dairy allergy. We started out with hemp, but he has a seed sensitivity, so it made his eczema worse.
