Is 6lbs the new average??

After reading alot of the birth stories on here it seems like a 6lb baby is average /normal now. I always thought it was 7lbs but by the looks of it no..not being rude at all just wondering if you all notice it too?

  • I always look at the birth announcements in my OBs office when I'm waiting and it seems like anything between 6something and 8something is average.

  • That chart would explain why when a friend of mine had her baby last weekend, the doctor said "That's a HUGE baby!" as she put her 7lb 9oz daughter on her chest. We both think she's TINY but she was 10 days early so I guess for the gestational age she is on the big side.

Her son was also nearly 9lbs so in comparison, that is pretty small.

Things to avoid during pregnancy: Eye contact with cats. Cats will suck the burgeoning life right out of you, using their infamous feline mind-powers. Avert your eyes, and move along.

FACT: 1 in 10 people are said to be a carrier of Listeria. Therefore you should avoid all shopping malls, grocery stores and busy street corners for the duration of your pregnancy. Or microwave anyone you contact until steaming, just to be safe.

Really?! Seems a little absurd that a doctor would think a 7 pound baby is "huge".

  • I was wondering about this myself. It seems like I hear about a lot of inductions as well. I don't think they are letting as many women go as long as they used to. I was 8lbs 6oz myself. My friend just had a 9 lb baby too and everyone just thinks she was soooo huge. I also though it was odd that they pushed my due date back a week based on her size after my first sonogram. I mean, it should be based on when you got preggo, not on weight right? I know when I got pregnant.

Meanwhile all the women who watch their due dates come and go are flipping out about having to wait haha. I was sooo upset yesterday. Then I remind myself "well originally she wasn't "due" until the 26th so I guess I just have to wait". This means after my original due date they can schedule me right away for an induction. It just seems strange.

  • This would also explain why my 8 pound baby was considered huge by everyone i talked to.

I can't believe that is huge! Considering he was so tiny in my arms!

That's what we thought! Apparently the nurses all agreed too... we go to the same practice so I'm wondering if they'll think the same thing about my baby.

I'm kind of wondering what the nursing staff at the hospital I deliver at will think of my LO now....I asked my OB to guesstimate (obviously there's really no way to know for sure) how big Charlotte is at my appointment this past Thursday (we're inducing Wednesday so I don't expect her to grow too much before then) and he thought she was around 8lbs.
