Baby Names

alliterative names- ugh

This is driving me nuts but I'm not even sure if it should.  DH & I have a last name that starts with K and is 2 syllables.  The 2 boy names I love both start with C and have a hard "K" sound.

Colby & Cory.  Would that sound dumb or cutesy (sp?) with a last name that is K----?

As a 2ndary question, WDYT of the two names (for boys)?  I love Colby for a boy but the ony problem is the only famous one i can think of is Colby Callait (sp???) the singer- who is a woman.

Re: alliterative names- ugh

  • alliteration doesn't bother me.

actually, i think it sounds nice and strong sometimes :)

  • Growing up, I knew 1 Colby, and he was a boy. I actually like the name. Cory is ok. I think either one could be ok with a "K" name, as long as there aren't multiple "K" sounds in the last name.

  • i prefer colby to cory. the alliteration doesn't seem to be so bad!

  • The alliteration doesn't really bother me, but I'm not a fan of either name. I guess I like Cory better than Colby.

  • I work with a guy named Cory K-- (two syllables) and it sounds fine. I like Colby better than Cory, but both are fine.
  • Alliteration doesn't bother me.  I like Colby much better than Cory, but neither name is bad.  I know a little boy named Colby, and he is totally adorable!

  • I am not a fan of either name. Something about a Y name ending for a boy just makes it sound less then masculine for me. I know of one Colby which is a girl, and I do believe it is pretty much swinging as a unisex name. Cory on the other hand is not used as much as unisex, so if you are worried about that, chose Cory.

  • I don't mind the alliteration either. I'm not a fan of Cory or Colby though. I guess Colby is ok, you can call him Cole.
  • I like Cory/Corey. I'm not a fan of Colby, mostly because I associate with with the cheese too much.

I don't mind the alliteration at all. Since I got married my last name starts with a "K" and is two syllables also. My first name starts with hard "K" too but I quite like my married name ;)

  • I think alliterative names are ok when they have a nice hard consonant and when the rest of the word doesn't sound similar. Also, just make sure you don't become one of those families that names each kid with the same initials!

  • Colby and Cory are a bad sibset. WAY too similar.
  • I have a Connor K____ and I like it (obviously, lol). I think the alliteration isn't as bad because even though the sound is the same the initials are different.

  • Some alliterative names are fine to me. However, the hard C sound is one that I can't stand the alliteration of. This is unfortunate, because our ln starts with a K. And some of my favorite names start with that sound. (Basically, I am in the same boat as you.)

Neither Colby nor Cory is my style. I'd stay away from them because your ln is also two syllables, especially if the emphasis is on the first syllable. I crossed Caleb off of my name list (it's my second favorite name for boys) because of the alliteration and sing-songiness of the emphasis on the first syllable of both.

FWIW, Colby makes me think of cheese (hey-I'm a WI girl). I definitely prefer Cory.

That being said, if the alliteration doesn't bother you, who cares what other people think?

  • Colby = cheese.

That's a bigger problem than the alliteration, IMO.

  • I have a friend named Colby who is a guy.  I'm not a fan of aliteration on boys.  My brain also goes to cheese.  The singer spells it C-o-l-b-i-e tho so on that note you should be fine if you use it.

Cory is an ok name in my book.  I don't love it but it's not horrible either.

  • I love names with alliteration (I have a Carson K__), so no problem there!

I really like Colby for a boy.

Cory sounds outdated-reminds me of an 80's heartthrob...Feldman and Haim anyone??

  • I like the alliteration, but I am a MM so I am used to it.

I prefer Cory over Colby, but think a name like Collin or Connor might sound better.

  • i'm not a fan of alliterative names. i grew up with one and it was too cutesy for me. i don't think you'll have an issue with colby because it's still overwhelmingly a boy name.
