Babies: 6 - 9 Months

anyone thinking of starting potty training........

I have friends who said they put their one year olds on the potty, for the heck of it, and they took to it!!!!  Still took awhile to be potty trained, but they were potty trained by 1 1/2-2!!!  Sweet!

thinking of starting around 1......anyone else?

Re: anyone thinking of starting potty training........

  • A friend of mine is Egyptian and they start potty training at 1 in Egypt and can't understand why in the States we wait so long. So...I guess it's possible. I'm not planning on trying till LO is a bit older though.

  • I know boys take longer than girls in most cases but I would like to start getting DS use to the idea for using the bathroom. My mom said that when I was around 1 I just decided I did'nt want to wear diapers anymore. crossing my fingers DS is like me!!

  • Yes I would like to potty train as soon as I can. I guess I'll see what happens and how I feel my son will take to it.

  • I plan on starting when DS can walk on his own or a year depending on which is first. My mom said I was out of diapers at night when I was 9 months old and potty trained completely by 13 months. I really - really hope DS is like me. MIL said DH wasn't until he was close to 2 and a half. That's a lot of diapers!

  • We put the potty chair in the bathroom at just under a year for DD.  She, completely on her own, was very interested in it and would go in it several times a day without any specific coaxing from us.  By 14 months she never pooped in a diaper again and was day potty trained by just over 18 months and totally off pull ups at night before 2.  We let her do it on her own essentially and she made it very easy.  I hope DS feels the same way!

  • Um, I am not even interested in PTing my 2 year old.  Ha.  He is just starting to tell us when he pees and we have a potty for him.  That is as far as we have gotten.  I am in no rush to spend all day in there with DD waiting for him to go until he is ready.

  • Nope.

It's my personal opinion that they are not truthfully potty trained until they can pee and poop in the potty during the day and the night and they don't need my help.  I think this "day trained" or "pee trained" stuff is crap.

DS#1 is just now barely trained.  He still sometimes has poop accidents, but we're going on a good streak again here lately it seems.   It took about 6-7 months which seems forever - but is a whole lot better than dealing with it for one or 2 years.

FWIW, I did purchase a potty chair around 18 months.  He was just not ready.

I'm not saying kids can't potty train early, but I think they are either an exception or they take a really long time to be fully trained.  There are muscles in their body that are not fully developed until much later than a year that allows them to be able to hold it at night, and again - I don't consider them trained until they are FULLY trained.

It's just really not something I'm going to push.  If he's nearing Kindergarten enrollment, and not trained, then I will worry about it.

ETA - I guess I should clarify with DS#1.  When he started asking to go and actually going on the potty, we moved to pull-ups.  That lasted for several months until I really decided to get serious with him and put him in underwear only.  After that it took a couple weeks to mostly get it, and right now we are still having occasional poop accidents.  It really is a process and I think you have to go mostly by their readiness and willingness with a bit of a push (or none at all) by you.

what she said.  DD#1 is gross motor delayed so that's partly why I'm laid back about it

  • my mom said that when she tried with me, i wouldn't take to it. about 6 months later i just did it on my own. I guess i'll try and if she doesn't do it, i won't force it. the harder you try sometimes, the worse it'll be.

this I will work with daycare when LO is showing signs of interest and seems ready and we will create a positive plan to help LO potty train quickly.

I helped potty train my little sister (who is 12 years younger then me) in one month when she was ready at age 2. It is much easier when they are ready, vs trying to push them when they are not.

  • I haven't given it thought of when we will start, but I can surely say I will not be the type to have her in diapers until she is 3!! (I know people who have!)
  • LOLLLLLLL Wtf!

Rubredvelvet - how can you SURELY say your kid won't be in diapers at 3?  Because ummmm, it happens - a freaking lot.  My kid is in diapers at 3 - I should probably have him taken away by CPS!  I am a poor excuse for a mother!

I am dying a little inside (of laughter).  The thought of PT a 1 year old = hilarity

I was so thinking this, but I just really had no idea what to say!  There are sooo many 3 year olds out there who are in diapers.  It's pretty common.  And normal!!

You are all CRAZY........ to think you can potty train a kid when they are one.  They don't have the physical coordination to pull their pants on and off at that age. Are you serious??  The kid will potty train when they are ready...not when you are.  Maybe you are parent training, not potty training.  When you have to keep asking them if they have to go pee who are you training?

Let go and let it happen when the KID is ready!

Anyone can be cool, but awesome takes practice!
  • Some people use elimination communication with babies.

Personally I don't see what the rush is. Changing diapers is easier than cleaning up accidents. We potty trained DD1 when she started to show interest, which was right around 2 1/2 years.

  • I'm with some of the earlier pp's.  I'd love to have him potty trained sooner rather than later.  My mom said I was potty trained by 18 months, and it sounds like others have been potty trained at an early age too, so it is possible.

This is just another debate that we'll go 'round and 'round about (like BF vs FF, disposable vs cloth, juice or not...)  Confused

Yeah, it is possible....with SOME kids.  I don't really see it as a debate.  I mean, you can try to potty train them early, but if they're not gonna do it, they're not gonna do it.  Not much to argue/debate there.

Are you serious?!  I didn't think that was scientifically possible re: muscular development.

My almost-nine-month-old has pooped on the potty every morning for almost two months. If I don't put him on the potty first thing in the morning, he waits to poop until I do.

Not saying I'm trying to potty trained-- we started doing it just because... but we'll start as soon as he's able to undress himself.
