Learned Something Interesting About Baby Durability

Apparently, the human skull is built to withstand a fall from the height of its own skeleton. IOW, a 5' man's skull is built to withstand a 5' fall whereas as 6' man's skull can take more force (whatever the gravitational pull/weight formula is to calculate the 1' difference in a fall). Now, this fall is presumed to be onto dirt not a modern invention like tile or cement. This makes sense evolutionarily speaking - it's not particularly amazing. What is awesome is that a baby's skull is built to withstand a fall from its *mother's* height until s/he is physically developed enough to walk alone. The human body never ceases to amaze me!

  • I didn't know the bit about a baby's skull, that's pretty fascinating. I had a friend whose toddler fell and took a good hit to the head and I remember her pedi telling her that generally a fall from the child's height or lower will not result in major trauma (unless the fall was broken by a blunt object or there were other circumstances at play).
  • That is so neat!
