tylenol is safe... but extra strength?

I know my doctor told me that tylenol was safe to take... standard dosage is 250mg x 2 tabs... All I have is extra-strength tylenol, which is 500mg per tab, so taking just 1 should be fine, right?

I know I could ask Dr. Google or spend 20 minutes on hold with the nurse on call, but I feel like I'm just having a brain fart and this is probably fine.

  • Yup, one would be fine.  The only reason they caution people away from extra-strength is that people will mistakenly take more mgs than they should.  The actual medicine is the same.

  • For non-pregos 4300mg per 24 hours is the max allowed.  I'll have to ask my dr at our next appointment if this is different for pregos since I get headaches quite often and tylenol sucks at getting rid of them.

  • Yes.  Regular Tylenol (acetaminophen) is 325 mg per tablet, extra strength is 500 mg.  In a normal adult the max dosage per 24 hours is 4 grams.  Unless you have liver issues, it shouldn't be any different when you are pregnant.  So generally don't take more than 2 regular Tylenol every 4 hours or more than 2 Extra Strength Tylenol every 6 hours.  I'd say if you are needing that much all the time there is problem that you need to address with your physician.
