Prenatals

What Prenatals are you taking?  I have been taking mine since I got off of BC last June, but in comparing what it has in it to my books, I am worried that it has no Omega 3/DHA.  Do you take any other supplements for Omega/DHA or any other nutrients (another concern is calcium) ?

TIA!

Re: Prenatals

  • Currently I'm taking Nature Made prenatals, but we'll see if the doc switches that up at my 1st appt.

  • My doc gave me a script for CitraNatal Assure. It has a regular prenatal tablet and a DHA Capsule. I definitely think this brand has a great mix of all the nutrients I need.

This.  And I do add an Expecta (a DHA supplement for pregnant/nursing moms), amnd a calcium supplement on days I don't eat much dairy.  This was all per my OB last time around.

  • I take up and up brand (target) prenatal and dha supplements
  • I take Rainbow Light  Prenatal One Multi, a DHA sup, B6, B12, folic acid, and a baby aspirin. The Folic acid (and baby aspirin) is for MTHFR mutation and a higher dose than most need. I feel like an old lady with my pill organizer!

  • So I asked my doctor and he said over the counter are fine and didn't say that I should be taking the ones with DHA that I could if I wanted to. He also added that the only thing that has been proven to do anything is the folic acid. The folic acid has been proven to reduce (it reduces risk by like 50% or something like that, paraphrasing him so I may be off, which is quite significant) but not prevent your risk of neural tube defects (so the vitamins are really only needed until the neural tube closes, he said not to worry if I needed to skip some because of nausea etc.).

My personal opinion is the vitamins don't hurt as long as you aren't over doing it but your body absorbs vitamins in food better than any pill you take. Eat healthy (dark green leafy vegetables, etc.) and you'll probably be gettin all you need. I wouldn't worry about it but if it's something that makes you feel better to do then get the vitamins with DHA/Omega 3. You could also try just adding something to your diet that has Omega 3 in it.

That being said I take Kroger brand prenatals and they gave me a sample of a couple of week supply of a prescription prenatal that I haven't taken yet.

For this reason, my doctor and I agreed it would be fine to stick to my normal Centrum chewables (I HATE big pills) and added Folic Acid 400mcg as soon as I got a positive test.  I am going to ask about Calcium chews at my next appointment since I'm lactose intolerant and tend to stay away from milk products. Also, maybe a Fiber supplement to help with constipation.

  • If it doesn't say it on the label then it doesn't have DHA. I take Spring Valley prenatals, fish free omega 3 DHA, vitamin d (because I'm deficient), and calcium citrate because I don't drink milk and I am not getting enough calcium in my diet.

If you have any doubts or questions, ask your Doctor!

  • I took the Nature Made prenatals during my last pregnancy, and this pregnancy I'm taking the free RX vitamins that my Dr. called in for me.  As far as I know, neither one of those brands have the DHA in them, but I wasn't concerned them and I'm not now.  I was more concerned that they had the recommended folic acid, like my Dr. recommended.

  • I take a prescription prenatal (Duet DHA Balanced) which has a pill with DHA and omega-3 and a pill with folic acid, Vit D, Vit B6, and others. I've been on it since my first pregnancy in Oct '09. My gyn told me to stay on it while I was trying to pregnant again, though she didn't think it would take me 15 months!

  • I'm taking the Nature Made with DHA. I have been taking them since before my BFP. But I will be asking the NP at my first appointment about a prescription since they will be cheaper and we have an FSA.
  • I take the one-a-days.  They're a prenatal vitamin and a DHA supplement.
