S/O: How much to spend on DC for Christmas?

DH and I are kind of clueless as to how much to spend on dd for Christmas.  I tend to go overboard, so I was wondering what you have done or are planning to spend.  I know it can vary a lot, but just wanted to get a general idea.  Thanks!

Re: S/O: How much to spend on DC for Christmas?

  • I tend to go overboard too but we're watching our $ a lot closer this year so I'm going to be a little more frugal. We also have in-laws who spoil DD so in anticipation of all of this, I'll spend no more than around $200. If I end up buying DD the play kitchen that I have my eye on, it may be a little more.

  • Last year we bought DS one gift. We plan on doing the same this year. He is so young and he gets so many gifts from our family and friends that we didn't want to go overboard. We also have a small home, so we just don't have the room for all kinds of toys.

As he gets older we will teach him to go through his old toys (before Christmas) and we'll give them away to children who need them more than him and that will make room for the gifts he gets at Christmas.

  • The older they get the more we seem to spend :)

For Jack (who is 4 this year) we'll probably spend $150 ish (but he will get toys he wants plus clothes and pajamas he needs).

However for Sophi (who is 10 this year) we'll probably spend more like $300 - they grow up and start asking for stuff like iPods and Gameboy DS's :)

I will say we don't go into debt for Christmas gifts though - we never spend more than we have... and we've had lighter years in the past that we just make do.

And we also don't have huge extended families to buy for - just both sets of in-laws and my brother and sisters (who are teens).  So that allows us to spend a little more.

  • I'm planning on spending about $100...he is so young that he will have no idea what it is all about!  Part of that $ is going to be his 1st ornament and stocking, too.  I've already picked up a couple things for him, so just a couple more and we'll be done w/ Santa gifts.
  • Last year I spent $13 on a push/ride-on hippo for DD at Wal-Mart the day after Thanksgiving.  This year I probably spent about $30 on some books and a stuffed hippo.  (We have convinced ourselves DD loves hippos, I guess.)  I was thinking about buying her a wagon, but I think I'm going to wait until she's more aware of what's going on.
  • No more than $100.  I am really holding off on buying her stuff because I know she will get a ton from family and I don't want to over do it.  Plus, her birthday is in February so I don't want to go overboard.

  • My mom and MIL will go totally overboard on Christmas this year, as they did last year, and probably every year to come.  We will probably spend about $30 this year on DS.  I figure a few toys and jammies is mostly what he will get from us.  I figure that he is so little still that he will really have no clue, so why waste the money.  He already has a ton of toys from his birthday that take us our whole house!

  • MrsMandaK actually gave me this idea, but we are only doing three gifts for DS.  Since Jesus got three gifts, that is what we are doing for DS :) We did that last year, too.  I'm sure it will be under $100.00.  I think we're getting him a bike, so that will be the biggy.

  • Agathi (and MandaK), I really like that idea!  It's a good way to help focus on the reason for the season, and not just the gifts!!

  • We spent approx $150 on him (includes stocking gifts).  He is all done.  He will get plenty from grandparents.
Our kids are 19mths apart and we LOVE it!!

  • We will spend around $150-200 I guess. I really want to get her a play kitchen, some books and a few smaller toys since we put a lot of toys away recently in storage that she doesn't play with anymore.
