mastitis question

went on antibiotics this evening. The doctor told me to nurse on the affected side first each time, which is fine, except that DD is only taking one breast per feeding. If I keep on one side, isn't the other one just going to get plugged and engorged???

Do I need to pump every time, even in the middle of the night? I'm so tired :(

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

Re: mastitis question

  • First of all, congratulations, I didn't realize you had your baby! Party!!!

    When I had mastitis DS barely was able to get any milk out of the affected breast, so I would just start out on that side and then offer the other when he became frustrated, but at least the frequent nursing helped unclog everything after a couple of days.  Can you try that?  Or is she still getting milk out of the affected side? If so, I'm sorry, no advise here.  I hope someone can help and you don't have to pump.  I'm sure you're plenty exhausted and busy with two little ones! Smile

  • Usually during a bout of mastitis supply goes down on the affected side.  It is important to keep the affected side drained as much as possible.  Otherwise you feel like crap (even more tired) and the infection takes longer to go away.  Sorry.  Mastitis sucks.

  • The MW told me they get the most milk in the first 5-10 mins so I would do a full feeding on the infected side, then next session start her on the non-infected side and unlatch her around the 10 min mark to finish on the other side.  This was when she was between 1 and 2 months old and still had longer nursing sessions.  Feel better!

  • I had chronic mastitis and clogged ducts and I found that in addition to nursing the affected side, a warm bath followed by massage/hand expressing INTO THE WARM WATER helped the most.

    Feel better, mama!

    ::comes out lurking to say::

    Ditto! A warm bath felt so good. I fill the tub pretty full so it covers my breasts and then massage/express right there.

    I always have continued to nurse on both sides. But then again, most feedings J. feeds off of both. I'd definitely use the non-infected one at least sometimes.

    Get better soon!
