Doctor or hospital more important?

Hi everyone! I'm new to the message boards and need advice.  I'm 16 weeks pregnant and trying to decide on a OBGYN/hospital. I had a doctor that I really liked and was planning on delivering at Mary Birch but I have recently changed insurance and my doctor is no longer covered. I have now had an appointment with a doctor at Mary Birch and a doctor at Scripps Memorial La Jolla.  My husband and I both like the Mary Birch doctor better (both seemed competent but the MB dr was friendlier and more accommodating) but we also both like Scripps LJ hospital better (b/c of the private rooms). So, which do you think is more important to be happy with... the doctor or the hospital?

Re: Doctor or hospital more important?

  • To me, the doctor is so much more important! You will see them a lot through out your pregnancy. You want a doctor you feel can give you a great experience as well as be educated. You are only in the hospital for a few days at the most. A great dr can provide a great birthing experience and that was so important. With all that said, I work at Mary Birch, but I delivered at La Jolla because of my insurance. I think both of them are great hospitals. Have you toured the hospitals yet? I really suggest you do that if you are unsure of what is more important. It may help you:)

  • I would agree with PP that the doctor is more important. My doctor came to be a good family friend throughout my pregnancy. I felt extremely comfortable asking him anything, and he was a great educator in the process. I delivered at Scripps LJ and had a great experience. Your relationship with your doctor should be foremost because this is the person you need to trust to look out for your well being and the baby's well being during delivery.

  • For me, it was both, but the hospital was critical.  Identical twins are high risk and I needed to be at a level 3 NICU (Mary Birch) in case they came early.  But I lucked out in that I had the best doctor out there who happened to deliver there.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • In my experience your ob will not even deliver your child, and the hospital and nurses are the ones who will really effect your experience. The dr is like rock star who shows up as your starting to push, or in my case would come in to see if I was dilated and then eventual somebody else did my c/s. Also for me my ob, which i really liked went on an emergency family leave 1 month before my due date, and I had to change to a different ob at the practice. In the end it didn't really matter but you should decide what hospital is best for you and then pick an ob that matches your personality and birth wishes that delivers at that hospital. I delivered at UCSD in hillcrest and had a great experience, the nurses were all so great and the ob office I went to was at the UCSD medical building in la jolla- dr.deak and dr.chin, both great.
