So I was out shopping today for my DD's 2nd birthday outfit and the sales clerk at the BABY STORE mind you had the nerve to say "you must be almost due!"
I was confused for a minute - then was like "No - I have quite a ways to go...." (hi - yes, I have 3 more MONTHS to go) Thinking to myself - I can't friggin' believe the things people say to you when you are pregnant. Why not just ask me if I'm expecting triplets while you're at it???
Re: Frickin' People and the things they say...
Multi-tasking!
True - very true. It just seems so weird that people just make comments at will when you're pregnant, y'know? I think people need to know that if you're gonna make a comment - best to say "you look great" and leave it RIGHT THERE.
If it makes you feel better I had the following experiences within hours of each other earlier this week:
guy collecting carts in grocery store parking lot: "When is the baby coming?" "in May" "Oh....wow I thought it would be sooner."
AND
woman at a baby specialty store "Is the baby at home or are you expecting?"
I wasn't sure if I looked really pregnant, fat, normal, or what!
Our precious girl, born at 27 weeks.
I may be one of those "frickin' people" although I don't think I'd ever make a comment about belly size to anyone.
I have worked at 2 baby stores, we have an unwritten "never assume" policy. There have been a few foot in mouth moments at both places.
When I was managing "Please Mum" before DD was born I remember asking someone when they were due, and then their DH walked in with their 5 day old baby. I felt like such an idiot (I also felt really terrible). I was a few months pregnant at the time, and maybe a little over excited about pregnancy in general.
I'm at a different baby store now and this summer my boss asked someone when they were due. I had been helping her and totally thought she was pregnant, but I hadn't said anything about pregnancy because I wasn't totally sure. She was wearing an empire waist dress, had some belly sticking out and was browsing the baby sleepers. Apparently she had a 12 year old and was not at all pregnant, she was just looking for a gift. My boss was so embarrassed, she went and hid in the back room for a while after that.
