Frickin' People and the things they say...

So I was out shopping today for my DD's 2nd birthday outfit and the sales clerk at the BABY STORE mind you had the nerve to say "you must be almost due!"

I was confused for a minute - then was like "No - I have quite a ways to go...." (hi - yes, I have 3 more MONTHS to go) Thinking to myself - I can't friggin' believe the things people say to you when you are pregnant. Why not just ask me if I'm expecting triplets while you're at it???

  • At least you look pregnant and not just fatter, though, right? ;-)

True - very true. It just seems so weird that people just make comments at will when you're pregnant, y'know? I think people need to know that if you're gonna make a comment - best to say "you look great" and leave it RIGHT THERE.

  • If it makes you feel better I had the following experiences within hours of each other earlier this week:

guy collecting carts in grocery store parking lot: "When is the baby coming?" "in May" "Oh....wow I thought it would be sooner."

    AND

woman at a baby specialty store "Is the baby at home or are you expecting?"

I wasn't sure if I looked really pregnant, fat, normal, or what!

  • I may be one of those "frickin' people" although I don't think I'd ever make a comment about belly size to anyone.

I have worked at 2 baby stores, we have an unwritten "never assume" policy. There have been a few foot in mouth moments at both places.

When I was managing "Please Mum" before DD was born I remember asking someone when they were due, and then their DH walked in with their 5 day old baby.  I felt like such an idiot (I also felt really terrible).  I was a few months pregnant at the time, and maybe a little over excited about pregnancy in general.

I'm at a different baby store now and this summer my boss asked someone when they were due.  I had been helping her and totally thought she was pregnant, but I hadn't said anything about pregnancy because I wasn't totally sure.  She was wearing an empire waist dress, had some belly sticking out and was browsing the baby sleepers.  Apparently she had a 12 year old and was not at all pregnant, she was just looking for a gift.  My boss was so embarrassed, she went and hid in the back room for a while after that.

  • I would have taken that comment over one that I got the other day.  I work at Wal-Mart and a customer asked me if this was my first (yes) and how many I wanted to have.  I didn't give a specific answer but she told me I shouldn't have more than 2 so I wouldn't end up on welfare.  I was PISSED!  However, I finished her transaction and told her to have a nice day.  What I would have LOVED to tell her is that I only work there so I can go to school so, please mind your own (EXPLETIVE) business.

  • I feel your pain. We went out to eat with a large group of people last night. None of them with kids and most single. DH's friend asked me if I was 8 months now. Ummmm no not yet! He also went on to ask if I was still working and others chimed in that I really probably wasn't capable to work much longer. As long as I am not ordered on bedrest I am going to be working till at least 39 weeks. I think that most people who aren't around a lot of pregnant women don't see a lot in magazines or tv at 8-9 months so don't realize what is normal.
  • I'm usually pretty intolerant of dumb comments, but I don't mind any of the pregnant ones ("are you due soon? wow, you're huge!") at the moment.  I'm just glad I finally look pregnant and not like I've just had a lengthy love affair with bacon!
  • Oh I know!! People are terrible!! They're like "Oh look at youuu." Instead of oh you look great lol. Its like just because Im an athlete doesnt mean that being 7months pregnant I'll still have a six pack with a baby behind it! Has anyone ever heard of estrogen lol..... Ugh!! My hubby keeps reminding me I look great and to ignore all the comments but sometimes the few negative ones I get really drive me nutso!!
