I have a linen SBP ring sling for my large (18+ lb) 3-month-old. At home, I use a wrap with him, but I really wanted something quick and easy that I could use for errands without dealing with tying large amounts of fabric. Easier said than done.
I've been watching youtube videos as well as the DVD that came with the ring, but I'm really struggling with tightening it without everything getting twisted, even though I try to spread the fabric before tightening, and pull the tail corresponding to the rail the way they say to. Is there some secret I'm missing? Was linen a bad choice? I washed it to help it soften up a little bit, but I'm still having issues with it not "flowing" through the rings nicely.
I also can't seem to master a tummy-to-tummy upright hold that looks secure and keeps him comfortable. He doesn't like having his legs tucked in, so maybe part of the issue is he's heavy enough to be an older baby, but his legs can't straddle quite enough to get the fabric securely under his bottom? If that's the case, is there another hold someone can suggest that would have him upright and able to see, but is age-appropriate for his hips and legs?
Thanks in advance! I really want to be able to use this thing well!
Re: Novice ring slinger needs help from seasoned pros
Your baby is TOTALLY old enough for legs out. I was doing legs out with mine in her RS by 2 months (o the advice of my local babywearing group leader).
You don't need to "straddle." What you need to do is tuck under her bum so there's a pouch -- much as you would for a wrap in ruck. Then the weight of her body keeps the pouch up and supporting her thighs to her knees. Then she basically does the same froggy leg position mixed with a straddle.
The turning point for me in figuring out my RS was to start with the rings WAY up high (like on TOP of my shoulder, horizontally, like a shoulder pad). Then I put her in. Her weight pulled it down a little, then when I tightened (you pull one corner out and down, then the other corner out and down to tighten each rail), it pulled down even more and landed in perfect "corsage" position.
Then I spread the fabric on my shoulder and back.
I have an SBP in tencel, FWIW. It flows pretty nicely through the rings.
