Bridesmaid Dress Damage Control

(The other BM post made me think of this.)

So I'm going to be in a wedding at 31 weeks and just happened to order my dress 1 month before I found out I was pregnant. We tried to cancel or change the order, but no luck. Luckily, the dress has an empire waist and is actually really flattering. The problem is I know I'm going to need some extra room.

I tried calling the company and asking about ordering extra fabric, they said they don't do that. The dress is black, and the fabric is satin. How easy would it be to find the same black at a fabric store and have a seamstress add panels? I know manufacturers have  different dyes, but would this be possible? The dresses are in, and I need to get my dress from her and go from there. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Damage Control

  • Is there a chance that it's going to need to be hemmed anyway? I know most of the BM dresses I've gotten had to be take up at least 3 inches, if not more and I'm 5'4". Maybe they can use the fabric from the bottom to do something like panels. Or, hopefully since it's black you can find something that matches.

  • I'm 5'4'' too and plan on wearing flats, so maybe that's a possibility. However, when I tried on the sample it wasn't THAT long.

  • I had a BM who didn't fit into her black satin dress for my wedding. She took her dress with her to a fabric store and they took out every bolt of black satin until they found the one closest in color. Honestly you couldn't tell it wasn't the same black.
  • I'm sure you can find a similar match as pp suggested, the other option would be if any of the other girls are hemming their dress more than you, you could use their extra fabric perhaps?

This is a pricey option, and most likely not an option, but for my wedding one of my DH's cousins is a bigger girl, and we ended up ordering her two dresses and a seamstress used the second one to create panels.  It worked for us because my bridesmaid dresses were a STEAL at only like $70 each!

  • I'm having the same issue, but with a hard to match red organza and its in 5 weeks. AAAAHH!

If you can used the hemmed fabric to create just some small gussets in the seams, that might give you enough room to move. Another option would be to create sort of a corset back, so you can grow.

  • I think it is going to be hard to find an exact match for the black satin but it will probably be close enough. If you add the panels to the sides rather than the front or back they will be more concealed.  That is so annoying!

  • Similar to what HomeDiva said- maybe you can find an inexpensive used one on ebay in any size to use for fabric.  If it is from a common store like David's Bridal or Alfred Angelo it might be possible.   I choose my bridesmaid dresses from Davids Bridal so my maids had the option to buy new at the store or buy used online.  Heck I even bought my wedding dress used off Ebay!

  • i would just wait until youget the dress and take it to your tailor to see what they say and go from there. our tailor told me to just bring in my bridesmaid dress when i get it and they will take a look to see what needs to be done. they're the experts and do that sort of thing all the time. hopefully you'll be just fine, especially since it's empire waist.
