milk allergy moms

Can someone give me a quick rundown on the dangers of soy?

The reason I ask is because one of my FB friends yesterday was asking questions about milk allergies, so I was answering some of her questions.  I mentioned that we give Tyler soy milk since he can't have regular cow's milk.  Then a bunch of her other friends (that I don't know) came out of the woodwork and were all like, "Don't give her soy, whatever you do!"  "Oh, the hormones in soy!  Steer clear of that!"

It made me feel like a complete idiot, but soy was what was recommended to us by Tyler's allergist.  What are the bad things about soy?  Should I be avoiding it altogether?  I would think if it were terrible, a doctor would have told me to stay away from it.

  • Well then I'm an idiot right along with you.  Caleb was on soy milk per the ok of our pedi for 2.5 years.  I think it has something to do with estrogen, but not totally sure what.  We switched to lactaid milk a few months ago since every time we try to get him on cow's milk he has diarrhea.  I'm interested to hear the responses you get.  But FWIW....so far, DS doesn't seem to have any issues from being on soy milk...unless you think maybe his whiney tantrums are from the soy??  Wink

  • I think some people, not medical professionals, are concerned about the phytoestrogens but my doc pretty much discounted it.
  • Ditto what the others said, but it was still the first thing I tried when we couldn't do cow's milk with Charlotte.  She actually didn't do well with soy either though.  If Tyler is doing okay with it, I wouldn't worry about it, however if you do want other options, Charlotte seems to do fine with either rice milk or Lactaid.

  • A whole culture relies heavily on soy and I don't see them dying out or having issues from soy so I call 'phooey' to these so called friends trying to scare you.  Think about all the SE Asians who eat Soy regularly, tofu, soy milk, soy bean curd sheets, I could go on and on.

As for milk allergies, a lot of times a dairy allergy can go hand in hand with a soy allergy which is the case with DS2.  We are strictly off dairy and soy until he turns 3, we recently tried diary and it was ugly :(  So rice/almond/hemp milk are alternatives too.
