3rd Trimester

paternity leave.(vent)

so my dh is taking a week off after the baby comes and since we're being induced it's all arranged. so his boss tells the interns that if they have any questions he will have his phone on so they can just call him. seriously?! she is cracked if she thinks that he will have his phone on while we're in the hospital! it's not our fault that you still don't know how to do the stuff you should in your dept lady and the one person who does is going to be a dad. when he told me that i was like...yea i don't think so. if she calls us at the hospital i'm going to give her an earful!

Re: paternity leave.(vent)

  • Boss is "cracked", I agree, but it's your husband who needs to get this settled. And he needs to do it before induction day.

  • I agree - boundaries need to be firmly set. He should not be expected to take work calls while he is OUT ON LEAVE. I am with ya!

  • I'm totally anticpating this problem with my husband's work because they seem not to be able to function without him.  However, if we are busy he will just not be answering and they will have to deal since he is technically off the clock.

  • Here is the sad thing....  My H is worried that it will be me answering the phone.  It is kinda a joke between us.  I won't and work knows this, but I am the one that lives with my Evo attached to me.

  • H has told me he's taking two weeks off, but by off, he means he's going in or 2-3 hrs per day to take care of some things.  (He's doing clinical research and needs to make sure his mice are fed/taken care of).

Hey, guess what, H. YOU HAVE UNDERGRADS.  teach them to do it. :(

  • Not that this makes it right, but I think that is pretty standard attitude these days.  My DH has a work phone specifically so they can get a hold of him when he's not in the office (weekends, vacations, etc).  Most of the time it is e-mails and when it is a call he doesn't answer and checks the messages later.  He usually can send a quick e-mail back through his blackberry.  Rarely he has to call back in.  We don't love it, but it is a part of today's work environment.  They told him to get a phone for this purpose. I think DH has done a good job establishing boundaries that don't make me feel like work is taking away from our family time, but also allowing work to feel like they have access to his input on his projects that are still moving forward while he's gone.  I think you have to remember work has your DH's number, but he doesn't have to take the calls especially while you are in labor and delivery.

  • My husband is attached to his work e-mail. They know that he's unavailable during the surgery, but I couldn't care less if he answers an e-mail before the surgery or even after. We'll have so many people visiting that he can step away for a minute.

  • That's too bad.  Obviously your DH will not be answering the phone :) If your husband is taking an unpaid paternity leave I would urge him to work with the interns before hand, so there are NO interruptions. There is no reason that his company should be calling if he is taking unpaid leave.

My DH's job is very demanding and he works long hours though HR is very clear and strict about his actual "paternity leave."  Meaning that they won't let him do any work (including phone calls, e-mails, texts, etc.) pretty amazing departure from the work at all hours of the day in any form.  The company says it is the only way the company can claim that they offer this as a benefit.
