Ergo question

DS has been in the Moby since birth and still takes almost all of his naps in it. We love it! I received an Ergo for Christmas, and I'd like to use that especially for going out. I tried him in it at 4 months, but he screamed about it. I just tried him in it today, and he was happier but still not as comfortable as in the Moby. He looks very small in it, so I think that could be a big part of it. When did your LO start liking the Ergo w/o an insert? Is there any adjustment I can make short of an insert to make it more comfortable for him or do I just need to wait until he's bigger?

Re: Ergo question

  • I got our ergo when ds was 6mo and he liked it right away.  We never used an insert so I can't speak to that.  Since your DS liked the moby so much, have you considered getting a woven?

  • I honestly haven't looked into too many other types of wraps. He loves the Moby, and we'd heard good things about the Ergo so I decided to give that a try. Any woven recs. for me to research? Thanks!

  • I used a rolled up receiving blanket under her bum when my DD was your DS's age to help raise her up a bit.  She was too big for the insert but too small for the carrier alone (at least I thought so).  The blanket raised her up so she could see beyond the straps and that made her happier.

  • Just had success with this last night!  Dixon loved the ergo with the insert, but when he got too bog for the insert, he was never quite comfy in the Ergo alone, as he was still too small to spread his legs so far.  A couple of things helped (put the ergo waistband on first!):  when you position your LO against your body tilt his hips towards you; aim for his knees bent and his feet even with his bum; picture the happy baby pose in yoga... if his hips are tilted he will be able to spred his legs farther.  When he is comfy, have someone else put the ergo on for you.  I did this last night and it worked well.  Also, he managed to be off to one side so one of his feet did come out and the other one stayed frogged.  This was fine, and a friend of mine wore her LO like this until both feet could come out.  Five or six months is usually when that can happen.  Hopefully that makes sense... basically his belly still touches yours, as do his inner thighs, and inner calves.  His legs aren't wrapping around you, they are laying agains your belly.  GL!

I would suggest a Vatanai.  I'm assuming since you are in NC that heat will be an issue this summer.  I love my vat maruyama, it is thin and good for hot weather.  That being said, I'm not reaching for it as much as I was because DS is about 25lbs now and I want something more supportive.   You might want to check out ncbelle's webpage, she has a lot of great information on wovens and babywearing in general  https://www.becomingmamas.com/babywearing-2/

This is what I was going to say. It also allows her to comfortably be arms out. I still use this, even at almost 10 months old. :)

I also would suggest a woven, my LO loved the Moby and never took to the Ergo.  I'm still saving it incase he likes it as a toddler.  Where are you in NC?  There is a babywearing group that meets in Cary once a month.  I just went for the first time this month, and the mama's there bring all their wovens so you can try them out (they also have SSC, ring slings, etc.).  It was nice to try out some different kinds and have other mom's there to help you learn different carries.

  • We got our Ergo when DD2 was 6 months. She was great in it from the start. She hated the Moby. I tried a few times with it when she was younger, gave up, and gave it to a friend who just had a baby. (Her baby loves the Moby.) I think maybe different babies just like different carriers.
