Apparently naps are out of style...

2 Questions, actually:

1) Any tips on how to deal with and/or remedy this situation:

My 15 wk ds has decided there will be no more napping.  By the time I really figured out his nap schedule he gave up on them.  What's odd is he went from 2 short naps and a long nap every day to "Hell no I ain't nappin'!"  I'm thinking it's the beginning of teething as well as a growth spurt.  But he's SO tired and fussy by the time the early evening rolls around and it's getting hard on all of us.  Not to mention this place looks like an episode of Hoarders and nothing is getting done.

2) Any suggestions for a light sleeper?  I tried from the get-go not to be extra quiet around him, hoping he would get used to sleeping through noises.  He has always been SO jumpy and wakes at the slightest sound or movement.  Is this just how it's going to be?  Or is there anything I can do to desensitize him a bit?

TIA ladies!!

Re: Apparently naps are out of style...

  • White noise might help with the sensitivity to sound.

But I was really coming to say that my LO has gone through several phases where I've thought, "she'll never nap again." but she's always come back around.

She also went through a phase where we had to creep around the house for fear of waking her and now she'll sleep through anything, the dogs barking, people knocking on the door, walking in and out of her room etc etc etc.

So I know it's challenging but I worked on the theory of, "I will keep giving you the opportunity to nap when I think you're tired but if you choose not to sleep that's ok."

Sometimes too it can help to look at other parts of the puzzle, has he got a nice full tummy, a sore tummy, is he close to a developmental milestone like rolling over or crawling etc etc.

  • Thanks for the words of encouragement.  I actually decided to lie down with him just after that post.  I know I can't take a nap every day (as nice as that would be.)  But hopefully he'll start getting tired at the same time every day.  Even if it's one good nap, that'll help.  Ironically he slept for 2.5 hrs, woke up to eat, and now is trying to fall asleep again.  Everyone says, "Sleep begats sleep."  Hopefully this is day one of a turnaround.

And yes, he is hitting a few milestones.  Definitely trying to roll over and most likely cutting a tooth. Thanks!

  • Casey has and does go through phases like that.  For those times I put him in the sling or wrap to get him to sleep or snuggle with him and take a nap with him.  Sometimes it doesn't work and while sometimes those days are hard I always know that there is always a new day ahead of us.
