LO is 6 1/2 mths old...is plain pasta ok?

Hi Ladies!

LO is just 6 1/2 mths old and ped wants her eating more than formula. I've made veggies, apple sauce. cereal, jar food...spits it all out. Is plain pasta ok @ this age? Any other suggestions?

Thanks so much

  • All that stuff is kinda sophisticated for a 6 1/2 month old, IMO.    I'd just start super slow with the rice cereal until LO gets a grasp of that.  Don't rush him/her into taking more hardy foods, especially pasta which will probably make him gaggy.  He doesn't need all that much variety yet.. just get him used to the textures.

And I was advised to just use rice cereal early on.. oatmeal and other wheat products could possibly trigger allergies, especially if you have a family history.

You also need to do the three day rule.  Try one thing for three days without other things to make sure he/she isn't allergic.

  • I wouldn't have given DD pasta yet then. But at that point we were starting chunkier purees and small cubes of soft bananas and avocado. The foods they can eat do start to change fast around 8 months. Because all pedis are different, I'd call back and get some clarification. For instance, our pedi was very anti rice cereal due to its low nutritional value so DD was eating oatmealt from 4 months on. Wholesomebabyfood - can't remember if it's .com or .org has great recipes as does onehungrymama. Maybe you can get some ideas there. GL
  • I agree with pp's... too young.
  • At this age it is just for learning.  I would not push it.  Pick one thing try it, take a break, and if baby is not interested try it again in a few weeks.  Baby might just not be ready ; )

We started with oatmeal very thinned out (mixed either with breastmilk or formula), then I always followed the try 1 for 3-4 days for each color.

  • I also agree, too advanced. I'd start with baby cereal with formula very runny, then fruit purees. DD didn't start eating actual table food until well after a year old.

  • Like Piranha54, our pedi was anti-rice cereal and only wanted it used sparingly and to help teach her to eat. He wanted us to focus more on fruit and veggie purees.
