Re: Glucose Fasting during the day?!

  • I was told to fast two hours before the test, does that sound right to anyone else?  She didn't say to avoid any foods during the day.

  • hmm? I just scheduled my test yesterday and they told me to fast, but if I had to eat, eat only protein. and they said to watch the carbs the day before too. I was worried because I cant go in until 9:30! I couldnt imagine having to wait until 3:30! Yikes!Huh?

The only restrictions I had were not to eat or drink anything (including water or even gum) once I started the drink. I could eat/drink whatever after the blood draw.

This may not be how the test works... but it seems if you alter your diet, you may skew the results, as it's not how you would normally eat...? I don't know, I've also heard it doesn't matter what you do or don't eat, as the test is only measuring how your body processes the glucose in the drink.

  • I have never heard of fasting for the 1 hour test.  And I have had several of these and also the 3 hr.  Yes fasting is required for the 3 hour test and they schedule that for first thing in the am, so you are fasting through the night.

I would call and check on if you really need to fast.  If they want you to then stick with protein, ( eggs, tuna fish, cheese) or salad, no bread or snack bars.

  • Thanks everyone!  I might call and try to reschedule for a Saturday morning.  I just heard from a lot of people that they ate regularly and then took the test and failed and then had to take the 4 hour test!  I'd just hate to mess up the test because I ate something that affected the results.  Proteins seem like the way to go that day! • I had Trix for breakfast, a chocolate bar with lunch and iced tea on the way there. (I didn't know I was taking it that day) and still passed with 107. Don't stess :) I think if you're going to fail, you're going to fail no matter what you eat that day. I've never heard of fasting for the one hour.

I was told this as well during my first pregnancy.  But I also followed a don't eat 2 hours before the test rule and failed.  This time my test was at 9:30 am so I just didnt eat or drink anything before going in for the test (they havent called to tell me if I failed yet and the test was last Tuesday).

The OB office I'm goin to this time has a general don't eat within 4 hours of the test suggestion.  So in my opinion I wouldn't eat or drink (except water) 4-6 hours before the test...just because I know what a pain the 3 hour test is.  And if you think you'll be hungry waiting a few hours until the test is over....Imagine the 3 hour test when you have to fast for 8 hours and then on top of that it takes 3 hours to do the test....Thats 11 hours of not eating!

Edit- During my first pregnancy I failed the 1 hour test and passed the 3 hour.

  • I just had my appt. and talked to my OB about this bc I work nights and an afernoon appt. would be better for me. She told me that she "wasnt supposed to tell me this, but that I should fast before my test b/c if I didn't it could cause me to fail it." So, she told me to try maybe a salad...grilled chicken..eggs or plain toast.

I am actually going to get my drawn in the middle of the night while I am at work at the hospital and have decided I will probably eat about 12-1 and have a grilled chicken salad. Then probably eat some toast about 3. Im going to have my baseline drawn at 6-6:630 then drink the stuff. I hope it works. Good luck...Im not looking forward to drinking that stuff ..yuck!

That all sounds fine, except the toast. That wouldn't be my choice. Maybe a string cheese instead.
