Cloth Diapering

Diaper rash from the CD's?

My LO seems to have another diaper rash and I'm kind of surprised.  I thought one of the benefits of CDing was less diaper rashes.  Anyway, I read that adding a half cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle will get rid of any alkaline irritants clinging to the CD's.  Has anyone tried this or know if it works?

Thanks!

Re: Diaper rash from the CD's?

  • Does your DC have sensitive skin Does the detergent you use have enzymes in it? Those can cause rashes/blister type burns on their skin - especially if CD'ing.

  • What kind of CDs do you use? I know a lot of babies have a microfiber or suede allergy that is in the BGs and other diapers.

I never used vinegar, so I can't comment. GL

I'm using Purex Free and Clear.  I'm not sure about the enzymes but I don't think so.

  • I would bet on build up, whether it is detergent build up or ammonia burn.  What kind of detergent are you using and what is your wash routine?  A lot of people get detergent build up and need to add an extra rinse.  Using a low sudsing detergent like RnG helps too.

What kind of CD's are you using?  Some LO's skin cannot tolerate being wet constantly, so if you are using something like prefolds or fitteds with no stay-dry barrier, your LO's skin may not be able to tolerate it.  In that case you can use a fleece liner and I would change as often as possible.

I'm using Fuzzibunz.  I really hope that's not the case!

I use Purex Free and Clear and I do a pre-wash, then wash, then an extra rinse.  All in hot water.  I also change her every 2-3 hours (except at night).

I know it's so hard to nail things down when it seems like there are so many variables.  IMO, the Purex might be the issue.  I would try something like Rockin Green.  Good luck mama!!!

  • The instructions I received in my Jillian's Drawers NB trial specifically say to "NEVER" use Free & Clear detergents on CDs.  I don't recall whether they offered an explanation, but I made note of that since it's what I normally use.

  • I never used Purex f&c on our diapers but I tried it on ds's clothes at one point and he had a reaction to it.  I've used regular Tide powder on his diapers without a reaction and have been using Rockin Green for about a month now.  I love it..it's cut down on rinses and he's had no issues with it.  Good luck!

That's really interesting, I wonder why.  Thanks!

I think I may have to look into the RnG.  Thanks for your response :)

The free and clear detergents supposedly cause build up on the diapers.
