'drowsy but awake' + bedsharing = possible?

we pretty much bedshare 100% of the time with DS2, 11mo (we had a spell where he'd start the night in the crib in our room and then come to bed with us, but the last month almost it's been just bed from the beginning).

usually, it has worked just fine to nurse him and they lay down with him until he fell asleep - on average this would take ten minutes. so i hadn't even considered trying to get him to fall asleep on his own. (DS1 was falling asleep on his own in his crib by 10 months i think)

however, the last few nights he's really been giving us a run for our money - it's been an hour now and DH is taking his turn in trying to get him to fall asleep. i'm hoping it's just a little phase, but it has got me thinking if it's possible to get him to start falling asleep on his own when he's sleeping in our bed. when DH is home at bedtime we can handle him fighting sleep like he is tonight, but DH often works second shift, leaving me to get both boys to bed. this can be extremely stressful when DS2 is fighting sleep and i have to lay with him for 45 minutes or more.

anyway...this is longer than intended. has anyone successfully gotten their kiddo to learn to fall asleep on his/her own while in a big bed, and how? what age?

  • Dr Sears has written a bit about this, but I don't have any exact quotes off the top of my head and I haven't read to deep into the topic.

Try looking at his site and see you can find any helpful info there.

  • We're working on this now as well and it's not going that well.  I'm sure it's just me being uncomfortable with the transition, but still...

Have you read the No Cry Sleep Solution?  She recommends nursing until they're "drowsy" then breaking away once they start to drift off but are not really asleep.  I'm guessing that includes getting out of bed at that point.  (I put ds down between 7:30 and 8 then sneak off until he wakes up again.  I need to work on the NOT sneaking out part, though.  He's onto me.)
