XP: Group B Strep?

XP from PGAL:I was in L&D the other night for contractions and I found out that I tested positive for group b strep.  My doctor said that I'd be given antibiotics as soon as I go into labor, but she didn't say much else about it.  Of course, I didn't think of a million questions until after I left, so even though I knew I shouldn't, I asked Dr. Google, who made it sound more dangerous than my doctor had (as he usually does). Anyone hae any experience with group b strep?

Re: XP: Group B Strep?

  • This is my 1st baby and I tested positive for GBS.  There really is nothing to it.  If your water breaks you need to get to the hospital ASAP so you can get antibotics in your IV.  Other than that, that all. Over 40% of women have this and some may have it with one child and not there 2nd, 3rd, etc. Don't stress over it.  The internet can make you paranoid about things.  I read over the net and asked my OB and she said it's not a big deal!!  Good luck with the baby:)

  • I found out Thursday that I tested positive too and I made the mistake of google-ing it also.  But honestly, I'm not too worried about it.  From what I understand, it is found in lots of perfectly healthy women with no symptoms or side effects.  The reason for the antibiotics when you give birth is to keep it from passing to your LO.
  • I was positive with my DD. They give you an IV antibiotic when you go into labor. If your water breaks, you have to go to the hospital right away, because you risk infection.

As long as you get your antibiotics, it's really nothing to worry about.

Some people don't like the idea of being hooked up to an IV as soon as they walk in the door. And want to be able to move around. (If you weren't planning an epi or anything.) If that's the case, you can usually talk to your doctor and have a hep-lock put in. So you can get the antibiotics but then disconnect and move around. (Although I'm pretty sure you need 2 or 3 doses, so you'd have to reconnect.)

  • I tested positive with it with DD. It was no big deal, but I did get an epi so I had no idea what they were giving me with all those tubes. I totally forgot about it until my Dr said that I needed to be tested at 36 weeks.

  • There are several things you can do to both prevent and treat GBS on your own. I am hoping for a natural, unmedicated birth at our birthing center, so I'm hoping to avoid being hooked up to an IV. I was given the following information:

The neonate contracting GBS from the mother is rare but scary. If a patient is positive, there should be NO internal exams during the pregnancy, NO AROM (without good reason, such as imminent delivery), and especially NO IUPC or IFM. Logic dictates that if GBS is at the introitus then we shouldn't be pushing it up to the cervix.

Please know that this protocol is not designed to trick the test. It is designed to reduce the population of GBS in the mother's body - it is a preventative supplementation to avoid GBS and also works as a treatment for GBS.

Protocol for women who want to avoid colonization with
GBS before the screen or who want to treat GBS
    if they do test positive:
Take twice a day (breakfast and dinner)
Acidophilus  4 billion cells per dose
Echinacea  350 mg capsules x2 caps
Garlic  580 mg capsules x2 caps
    Vit. C  500 mg w/200mg bioflavenoids
Grapefruit seed extract  15 drops or one
        capsule
Zinc & Vit B-6 can also be added w/beneficial
        results

Ive never heard of this. I didn't think strep B was necessarily something you could prevent.....

Surprised me too, but it's true.
