2nd Trimester

do I really need a double stroller?

I am trying to figure this one out.  DD will be three a month after this baby is born.  She barely uses a stroller now, just really at the mall, and events like the zoo.  Is it really worth it?  Can we just bring an extra stroller and DH can push it,if we are at a random event that requires a lot of walking?  Just curious what you are all doing for 2nd time moms!  TIA

Re: do I really need a double stroller?

  • I got a double stoller and only used it a couple of times. If your baby barely uses the stroller as it is I wouldn't worry about it. I would just get one of those umbrella strollers and keep it with you. Good Luck!

  • We bought the Joovy Ultralight Caboose and took it with us to Disney this past December.  My daughter really does not ride in the stroller anymore, but it was nice when she was tired and she really likes to ride on the back.  We plan to use the Chicco Cortina stroller with the infant carrier like we did with our daughter for this baby.  We got the Joovy for longer walking trips.  I just realized that I need to get a stroller though for walks around the block.  That is the only time my daughter will still ride in the stroller.  I'm looking at the Baby Trend Expedition double jogger that someone suggested on the toddler board.

  • We're not getting one at this point.  I plan to wear the baby (or DH will) most of the time if we're out with both kids and DS can use a stroller if need be.
  • I have got to say the santa pic. is the cutest santa pic I have ever seen!!

  • As of now we do not plan on buying a double. DD will be 22 months when baby #2 arrives. I figure that I probably will not be going many places by myself with 2 young children. If we go somewhere as a family, I plan on either wearing baby and putting DD in her Maclaren stroller that we currently have for her, hubby can push her in that. We still have a travel system also, so we can put baby #2 in that as another option. Double strollers seem so bulky for going to the mall and everything. I already feel like we knock over things with the strollers we have now, can't imagine being twice as long or wide! If we do break down and buy a double, it won't be until next year and we will get a nice jogger.

I would have to disagree. We never had any issue with our our jogger.

  • A friend of mine used the sit and stand- she loved it for her son.  He was 2 1/2 when his brother was born. Maybe that is a better fit for you?

I love our Baby Trend stroller as well.

  • We hardly ever used our stroller. I honestly regret spending the money on it.  We just carried her for short trips and used a baby carrier for longer ones.

Maybe you could get a baby carrier and put it in your purse or stroller and if your 3 year old doesn't want to walk you could move her to the stroller and put the baby in the carrier?

  • I wore DS for quite a while when he was born, so I plan to do the same with this next baby.  That way, if DS is tired, he can use the stroller.  Otherwise, baby can use it and DS can walk.

  • We're in the exact situation and I still can't decide. DS will be 3 a month before baby is born. We still use the stroller from the travel system quite a bit, mostly trips to the park and the occasional fair or festival. We got a wagon that we can use for walks and trips to the park but I think there will be a few instances where we will need double. I just can't decide if its worth the cost. I've heard the sit and stands are good, that may be the route we go.

  • My DS will be just short of two when this baby arrives.  My mom told me not to bother with a double stroller...but I will probly get one anyway.  I suppose I could get away with an baby bjorn and the stroller we have for now.  Or even use the bigger stroller for the new baby and the umbrella stroller for DS.  Its a tough call for me though because I know there will be places and times DS will not want to walk around the whole time, despite his being very indipendent.

There are a lot of times I took DS to the zoo and even the county fair last summer without DH so having someone else there to push another stroller isn't very likely.

  • we just bought the baby jogger city select. There are a lot of really good deals on the 2010 model right now.

But, DD will be 3 a month before this one is born...and she still LOVES to ride in the stroller. Much of the time, she ASKS to ride. But, if she decides she hates the stroller, no biggie, we just won't put the second seat on.

  • We're skipping a double stroller. I plan to carry DD in the Moby, Baby Bjorn, sling, etc. and push DS in a stroller if ever necessary.

  • We picked up a double stroller at a consignment store.  It was cheap and it has served its purpose.   I walk to the grocery store though, and I load the kids up in the double and shop from the stroller.  It also has been a must for longer trips to the zoo, disney world, etc.  DD can walk in those situations, but she prefers the security of the stroller.  For shorter trips like an hour at a local fair or a quick run to the mall, we've done two things.  In the beginning, I would put DD in the single stroller and DS in the Ergo.  Now DD walks and DS is in the single stroller.  I think the need of the double stroller really boils down to what type of situations you use the stroller now, if you use baby carriers, the comfort of your older child walking, etc.
